Chapter 4 - CLAIRE’S DEAD HUSBAND

Rosa survived.

Barely.

Doctors treated her in a private medical room beneath the estate.

She had a concussion and several broken ribs.

Claire sat beside her.

“Rosa?”

The older woman opened her eyes.

“Claire.”

“I’m here.”

“You have to take Lily.”

“Where?”

“Anywhere.”

“Why?”

Rosa began crying.

Claire had never seen her cry.

“Your husband.”

Claire froze.

“My husband is dead.”

“I know.”

Michael Bennett had died four years earlier in a supposed highway accident.

Lily was not even born yet.

Claire had been seven months pregnant.

Michael had worked as an accountant.

Nothing glamorous.

Nothing dangerous.

At least that was what Claire believed.

Rosa struggled to speak.

“He worked for the Vescari family.”

Claire laughed because the alternative was screaming.

“No.”

“He did.”

“No. Michael worked for Weston Financial.”

“A front.”

Claire stepped away.

“Stop.”

“Claire—”

“Stop saying his name.”

Dante stood at the door.

He had heard enough.

Claire saw him.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“Did your family kill him?”

“No.”

“How would I know?”

Dante entered slowly.

“Because I checked your background before hiring you.”

Claire stared.

“You what?”

“You were living on an estate housing one of the most targeted families in the country. Everyone gets checked.”

“And?”

“Michael Bennett had no criminal record.”

Rosa whispered:

“Because Bennett wasn’t his real name.”

Dante’s face changed.

“What was it?”

Rosa closed her eyes.

“Michael Vescari.”

Claire stopped breathing.

No.

Impossible.

Dante looked just as shocked.

“Relation?”

Rosa whispered:

“Adrian Vescari’s younger brother.”

Everything inside Claire seemed to disappear.

Adrian Vescari.

The man Dante had spent years fighting.

Michael had been his brother.

Claire sat down hard.

“That’s not possible.”

Rosa squeezed her hand.

“Michael wanted out.”

Claire remembered.

The nights he came home anxious.

The strange phone calls.

The way he insisted they move apartments twice.

The insurance policy he increased before his death.

She had believed he was worried about becoming a father.

“He was running,” she whispered.

Rosa nodded.

“From Adrian.”

Dante’s face darkened.

“And Sophia?”

“Michael discovered Sophia was feeding information to Adrian while married to Luca.”

Claire looked at Dante.

“Michael knew she killed your brother?”

Rosa shook her head.

“He suspected.”

“Then why didn’t he tell Dante?”

“He tried.”

Dante went still.

“When?”

“Four years ago.”

Rosa swallowed painfully.

“He arranged a meeting.”

Dante remembered a message.

An anonymous source.

A café.

The source never arrived.

Two hours later, a car went off a mountain road.

Michael Bennett.

Claire’s husband.

Dante’s stomach turned.

“He was coming to me.”

“Yes.”

Claire began crying.

Not quietly anymore.

All those years believing Michael died because another driver lost control.

All those years feeling guilty because their last argument had been about him working too much.

His final words to her had been:

I’m trying to make sure you never have to be afraid again.

She had thought it was a promise about money.

It had been about survival.

Dante sat across from her.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire looked at him.

“Did you know him?”

“No.”

“Did you order anything involving that road?”

“No.”

“Your people?”

“I’ll find out.”

“You better.”

Dante did not react to the threat.

He nodded.

“I will.”

Rosa started coughing.

Claire returned to her side.

“Why are Sophia and Adrian after Lily?”

Rosa looked at the child sleeping in a nearby chair.

“Because Michael stole something.”

“What?”

“A financial archive.”

Dante leaned closer.

“What archive?”

“Accounts. Payments. Judges. Police. Companies. Everything Adrian owned secretly.”

Claire shook her head.

“Michael never gave me anything.”

“He did.”

“What?”

Rosa looked at Claire’s necklace.

A cheap silver locket.

Michael had given it to her the first Christmas they were married.

Claire touched it.

“No.”

Dante stood.

“May I?”

Claire removed it carefully.

Dante examined the back.

A hairline seam.

Gabriel brought a small tool.

The rear plate opened.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

Claire stared.

Michael had placed evidence around her neck.

She had worn it at his funeral.

At Lily’s birth.

Every day since.

Dante looked at Claire.

“Does Adrian know?”

“He must.”

“Then why wait four years?”

Rosa answered.

“Because Michael encrypted it.”

“With what?”

“Lily.”

Claire frowned.

“She wasn’t born.”

“Her name was already chosen.”

Claire remembered.

Michael insisted.

Lily.

He said his mother once loved lilies.

Rosa whispered:

“The encryption phrase is something only Claire would know about Lily.”

Dante looked toward the sleeping child.

That changed everything.

Sophia did not want Claire because of Dante.

Not originally.

She wanted Michael’s archive.

Claire had unknowingly walked into the Moretti estate three years earlier carrying the most dangerous evidence in the city.

Dante asked:

“Who recommended Claire for this job?”

Rosa closed her eyes.

“Sophia.”

Claire felt sick.

Sophia had brought her here deliberately.

Watched her.

Befriended her.

Waited.

Why?

Because the Moretti estate was the safest place to hide Claire from Adrian while Sophia searched for the archive herself.

A cage disguised as protection.

Dante took the memory card.

“I can get someone to decrypt this.”

Claire snatched it back.

“No.”

Everyone stared.

“This belonged to Michael.”

“Claire—”

“No.”

Her hands shook.

“For four years, men I didn’t know have been deciding things about my life.”

She looked at Dante.

“My husband lied to me.”

At Rosa.

“Sophia manipulated me.”

Then back at Dante.

“You investigated me without telling me.”

He accepted it.

“You’re right.”

Claire closed her fingers around the card.

“If this opens, I’m there.”

Dante hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Fine.”

“And Lily stays with me.”

“No.”

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“No?”

“That is the one thing I’m not negotiating.”

“You don’t own us.”

“I know.”

“Then don’t act like it.”

Dante stepped closer.

“If Adrian Vescari knows Lily can unlock that archive, she is not leaving secured protection.”

Claire lifted her chin.

“She’s my daughter.”

“And I am trying to keep her alive.”

The room went silent.

Claire stared into his eyes.

“You care about her.”

It wasn’t a question.

Dante looked toward Lily.

Too long.

Claire understood.

Sophia had been right about one thing.

Dante Moretti had already become attached.

That made him dangerous.

And vulnerable.

A guard entered.

“Boss.”

Dante turned.

“We intercepted a call from outside.”

“Whose?”

The guard looked at Claire.

“Adrian Vescari.”

Claire went pale.

“He requested to speak directly to Mrs. Bennett.”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“No.”

Claire stood.

“Yes.”

Dante looked at her.

“Absolutely not.”

She took the phone.

“This is my life.”

Then answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice responded.

Warm.

Almost gentle.

“Hello, Claire.”

She stopped breathing.

“You don’t know me.”

“No.”

He laughed softly.

“But my brother loved you.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

Adrian continued.

“And if you want to learn who really killed Michael, you’ll stop trusting Dante Moretti.”

Claire looked at Dante.

“What are you talking about?”

Adrian whispered:

“Ask Dante where his car was the night your husband died.”

The line went dead.

Claire slowly lowered the phone.

Dante’s face told her something before he spoke.

He knew.

“What?” she asked.

No answer.

“Dante.”

His voice was quiet.

“My car was on that mountain road.”

Claire’s heart shattered.

“Why?”

Dante looked at her.

May you like

“Because I was there the night Michael died.”
