Chapter 8 - The Boardroom and the Handcuffs

The cathedral erupted into pandemonium.
Reporters in the press gallery leaped to their feet. Live television producers in the broadcast vans frantically screamed into their headsets as the audio feed broadcasted every syllable across international networks.
Christian scrambled backward, his face turning an ugly, ashen grey. “Genevieve! Have you lost your mind?! You’re having a traumatic hallucination from the pain meds!”
Gabriel Miller stepped to the center of the altar, pulling a wireless presentation remote from his jacket.
He clicked the button.
The cathedral’s massive dual broadcast screens—installed to show the bridal vows to the balcony—flickered to life.
Displayed before six hundred elite guests and seventy million viewers was:
The 4K Hospital Recording: The crystal-clear audio and surveillance footage from St. Jude Medical Center, playing Christian’s voice with terrifying fidelity: ‘If she’s left scarred, even better... Dr. Lawson adjusted her vitamins so she couldn't get pregnant... Leo is already four years old.’
The Chemical Purchase Logs: Derek Cole’s signed federal confession and the wire transfer receipts from Christian’s Panama account.
The Medical Forensic Autopsy: Dr. Lawson’s handwritten compounding ledgers detailing the systematic poisoning that caused my three miscarriages.
In the front row, Sabrina Sterling shrieked in horror, covering her face with her designer clutch as press cameras swarmed around her and four-year-old Leo.
Christian turned toward the side exit, attempting to bolt through the vestry doors.
The heavy oak side doors burst open.
Twelve armed federal agents from the FBI and Indiana State Police, led by Chief Prosecutor Evelyn Wright, flooded the altar with weapons drawn.
“Christian Prescott!” Prosecutor Wright announced, her voice booming through the cathedral’s sound system. “You are under arrest for Attempted Capital Murder-for-Hire, Aggravated Assault with Chemical Weapons, Fiduciary Grand Larceny, and Criminal Conspiracy to Administer Toxic Substances.”
Two federal marshals forced Christian onto his knees on the altar carpet, twisting his manicured arms behind his back.
Click. Snap.
The heavy steel handcuffs locked around his wrists with a sharp, resonant crack that echoed off the vaulted stone ceilings.
Christian thrashing against their grip, weeping in humiliating terror: “Genevieve! Please! I did it for the family! I love you! You can't destroy my career!”
I walked down the altar steps, stopping two feet from the kneeling coward.
I looked down at the man who had stolen my babies and tried to melt my face for money.
May you like
“You didn't have a career, Christian,” I said, each word slicing through his soul like diamond. “You had an illusion. And today, the music stops.”
