Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE WAS THE TRAP

Ryan ordered Vincent to drop his weapon.
Vincent did.
Clara knew instantly what that meant.
He was choosing her safety over pride.
Ryan noticed too.
“Look at that.”
His smile twisted.
“Vincent Romano taking orders because of my wife.”
“She's not your property.”
Ryan's eyes hardened.
“She is my wife.”
Clara stepped out from behind Vincent.
“No.”
Ryan looked at her.
“What?”
“I said no.”
“Clara.”
“You arranged my job?”
“Yes.”
“You tracked me.”
“To protect you.”
Vincent almost laughed.
Ryan glared.
Clara continued.
“You hit me.”
“You wouldn't listen.”
“No.”
She said it louder.
“You don't get to rewrite what you did because you're uncomfortable hearing it.”
Ryan raised the gun slightly.
Vincent moved.
Ryan snapped:
“Stay.”
Vincent stopped.
Clara looked at Ryan.
“What did you want me to find?”
“The archive.”
“The brass key?”
“Part of it.”
“You knew Elena gave it to me.”
“I suspected.”
“Then why marry me?”
For the first time, Ryan hesitated.
That hurt more than an immediate answer.
“Was any of it real?”
“Yes.”
“Which part?”
“Clara—”
“Which part?”
Ryan's face changed.
“I didn't expect to love you.”
She closed her eyes.
There it was.
The sentence she feared.
Because part of her believed him.
Ryan continued.
“At first you were an assignment.”
Vincent's jaw tightened.
“But then—”
Clara cut him off.
“No.”
Ryan stared.
“You wanted the truth.”
“I wanted one truth.”
She looked at him.
“Whether I imagined our marriage.”
She swallowed.
“I didn't.”
Ryan seemed almost relieved.
“Then—”
“But love that requires me to become smaller isn't enough.”
His face hardened.
“I took care of you.”
“You monitored me.”
“I protected you.”
“You isolated me.”
“I gave you everything.”
“You took every room I could breathe in.”
Ryan became angry.
Vincent saw the trigger before Clara did.
“Ryan.”
The man's eyes snapped toward him.
“Don't say my name.”
“You are losing control.”
“I have control.”
“No.”
Vincent's tone remained flat.
“A controlled man doesn't need a gun to keep a conversation.”
Ryan pointed it at Vincent.
That was the distraction Clara needed.
She struck Ryan's wrist with a heavy metal emergency flashlight mounted near the door.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Vincent crossed the distance.
He hit Ryan once.
Hard.
Ryan crashed against the wall.
Vincent took the gun.
Then kept moving toward him.
Clara saw his face.
“Vincent.”
He grabbed Ryan by the collar.
“Vincent.”
Ryan laughed bloodily.
“Do it.”
Vincent's fist tightened.
Clara touched his arm.
“You promised.”
He froze.
Ryan smiled.
Vincent stared down at the man who had hit Clara.
Betrayed Anthony.
Tracked Elena.
Helped engineer six years of lies.
Every instinct Vincent had been raised with demanded one answer.
But Clara's hand remained on his arm.
He released Ryan.
Matteo and guards arrived.
Vincent stepped backward.
“Police.”
Matteo blinked.
“Police?”
“You heard me.”
Ryan stared too.
Vincent looked at him.
“You spent your life believing men like me only know one way to end things.”
He adjusted his cuff.
“Today you're disappointed.”
Ryan was taken into custody through Vincent's legitimate security attorneys, with evidence already forwarded to federal investigators.
That decision changed everything.
Matteo said so later.
“If Dominic hears you're cooperating with federal authorities—”
“He'll panic.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
“You know what your father would say.”
Vincent looked at him.
“Which one?”
Matteo stopped.
Clara nearly laughed.
Vincent's humor was becoming alarming.
Ryan talked after twelve hours.
Not because police frightened him.
Because Dominic tried to have him killed during transport.
Ryan finally understood loyalty had limits.
He gave investigators names.
Accounts.
Locations.
And one detail nobody expected.
Anthony wasn't killed by Dominic's men.
Ryan had been there.
But someone else fired.
“Who?” Vincent demanded through the interview-room glass.
Ryan looked directly toward him.
“Your mother.”
Vincent froze.
Impossible.
Isabella Romano had been gentle.
Religious.
Devoted to Anthony.
Ryan explained.
Isabella learned Anthony planned to expose Dominic's paternity and the consortium.
She feared public revelation would destroy Vincent.
She went to stop Anthony.
An argument.
A gun.
One shot.
Accidental, Ryan claimed.
Anthony died.
Isabella broke.
Dominic arrived afterward and transformed the accident into an organized killing.
Elena escaped.
Vincent sat completely still.
Clara came beside him.
“I'm sorry.”
He didn't answer.
His mother had spent her final four years praying in the chapel where Anthony hid evidence.
Maybe that was why.
Not devotion.
Guilt.
Ryan gave them one more detail.
Isabella had recorded a confession before her death.
Dominic possessed it.
He used it to control her until she died.
Where was the confession?
Inside Dominic's Chicago residence.
Federal warrants were prepared.
But Dominic moved first.
He released information publicly.
Vincent Romano was the biological son of Dominic Romano.
Anthony's death was connected to Romano family criminal operations.
Reporters surrounded the estate.
Business partners panicked.
Politicians denied knowing Vincent.
The public narrative exploded.
For the first time, Vincent could not intimidate his way out.
Clara found him in the library staring at television coverage.
“They're calling me illegitimate.”
“People still use that word?”
“Apparently.”
She sat beside him.
“They're calling me a murderer.”
“You didn't kill Anthony.”
“I've done other things.”
Clara looked at him.
He did not pretend innocence.
That mattered.
“What are you going to do?”
Vincent stared at the television.
“Something my family has never done.”
“What?”
“Tell the truth before somebody forces me.”
The next morning, Vincent Romano announced a press conference.
Every adviser begged him not to.
He walked to the microphones anyway.
“My family has lied for decades.”
The room fell silent.
Vincent admitted the Romano organization had operated outside the law.
He announced his businesses would undergo independent review.
He would cooperate regarding Anthony's death and the consortium.
He would relinquish control of businesses tied to illegal activity.
Reporters shouted.
One asked:
“Are you admitting you're a mafia boss?”
Vincent almost smiled.
“I believe your newspaper has called me worse.”
Clara watched from behind the cameras.
Then another reporter shouted:
“What about Clara Vance?”
Vincent's face changed.
“What about her?”
“Sources claim your housekeeper is your mistress and that her husband assaulted her because of your relationship.”
Clara went pale.
Vincent looked directly at the reporter.
“Mrs. Vance's private life is not a weapon for you to use because you dislike me.”
“Are you romantically involved?”
“No.”
He paused.
Then added:
“And if that ever changes, it will be because she chooses it, not because I employ her.”
Clara stared.
No possession.
No claiming.
Choice.
Again.
Then police vehicles arrived.
Not for Vincent.
For Dominic.
He had been arrested at O'Hare Airport trying to leave the country.
Inside his luggage, investigators found Isabella Romano's confession.
And one sealed envelope addressed to Vincent.
From Anthony.
A second letter.
May you like
The final truth.
