Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO CALLED HIM SON

Vincent did not believe Evelyn.

Then she sent a photograph.

Salvatore Romano.

Vincent's mother Isabella.

Dominic.

Taken forty years earlier.

On the back:

ISABELLA — THREE MONTHS PREGNANT. D.R.

Vincent stared.

“No.”

Matteo said nothing.

Clara watched Vincent's face.

For the first time, she understood what he looked like without armor.

Not weak.

Lost.

Evelyn arranged a meeting.

Vincent refused to bring Clara.

Clara came anyway.

“You're becoming annoying.”

“You're becoming predictable.”

“I've always been predictable.”

“You run a criminal empire.”

“Consistently.”

Despite everything, she smiled.

Evelyn lived outside Madison under another surname.

She was seventy-three.

She hugged Vincent before he could stop her.

He stood rigid.

Then slowly returned it.

She told the truth.

Isabella and Dominic had been in love before she married Salvatore.

Salvatore married her for family alliance.

Vincent was conceived during one final affair.

Anthony was Salvatore's biological son.

Vincent was Dominic's.

“Did Salvatore know?”

“Yes.”

“Why raise me?”

“Because revealing it would have started a war inside the family.”

Vincent laughed bitterly.

“So everyone lied.”

Evelyn looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

“Why did you disappear?”

“Dominic tried to kill me.”

Clara stiffened.

Evelyn discovered Dominic was stealing from Salvatore's early businesses.

She threatened exposure.

Dominic arranged an accident.

She survived and disappeared.

Anthony eventually found her.

“He knew?”

“Yes.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

“Of course he did.”

Anthony had apparently been protecting him from yet another truth.

Evelyn touched his hand.

“Anthony loved you.”

“Everyone keeps saying that right before telling me what he hid.”

She accepted the anger.

“Fair.”

Then came the more important truth.

Dominic wanted Vincent dead six years earlier not merely because Vincent opposed business expansion.

He wanted Vincent dead because Vincent was his biological son.

Clara frowned.

“That makes no sense.”

Evelyn explained.

Dominic had spent decades hiding paternity.

If the consortium's financial crimes were exposed, prosecutors could trace old records, medical documents and private payments.

The family secret might emerge.

More importantly, Vincent unknowingly controlled several trusts whose inheritance structure would change if Dominic's paternity became public.

Dominic wanted control.

Anthony learned.

Anthony planned to tell Vincent everything.

He died first.

Vincent stood abruptly.

“I need air.”

He walked outside.

Clara followed after a minute.

He stood near the frozen lake.

“You don't have to talk.”

“Good.”

She waited.

Thirty seconds later:

“My father isn't my father.”

She almost smiled.

“You lasted thirty seconds.”

“Don't become pleased with yourself.”

“Too late.”

Vincent stared across the water.

“I spent my life trying to become different from Salvatore.”

“And?”

“Apparently I should have been worried about becoming Dominic.”

Clara stepped beside him.

“Biology isn't destiny.”

“Easy thing to say.”

“My husband hit me.”

Vincent looked at her.

“My father never did.”

She paused.

“My father was kind.”

“What is your point?”

“That I married someone nothing like the man whose DNA I came from.”

Vincent understood.

“Blood doesn't automatically teach character.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“And family?”

“Family can teach character.”

“Mine mostly taught paranoia.”

“Accurate.”

He laughed unexpectedly.

Then his face softened.

“You came after me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you looked like someone who shouldn't be alone.”

Vincent held her gaze.

Something passed between them.

Warm.

Dangerous in a different way.

He stepped closer.

Then stopped.

Clara appreciated the stop more than she would have appreciated the kiss.

“You're still married,” he said.

“Separated.”

“Still married.”

“Yes.”

“And injured.”

“Yes.”

“And emotionally surrounded by disasters.”

“Yes.”

“This would be a terrible time.”

Clara smiled slightly.

“For what?”

Vincent looked away.

“Exactly.”

They returned inside.

Evelyn had another surprise.

A bank account Anthony created.

It held copies of consortium records.

But access required two biological keys.

Anthony's DNA.

And Vincent's.

Anthony's sample existed in preserved medical storage.

Vincent could open it.

Dominic knew this.

That was why he had been searching for Anthony's key.

Not the brass key.

Vincent himself was the second key.

The consortium couldn't fully erase Anthony's archive without him.

Clara whispered:

“So he needs you alive.”

“For now.”

That changed the plan.

Ryan was not simply hunting Clara.

He was trying to locate the archive so Dominic could force Vincent to unlock it.

They returned to Chicago.

That night Ryan called Clara.

“Did he hit you?”

Clara stared.

Vincent sat across from her listening through secure audio.

“What?”

“Romano.”

Clara almost laughed from disbelief.

“You think Vincent did this?”

“I know how those men are.”

“You hit me.”

Silence.

Ryan's voice softened in the familiar way that once made Clara doubt herself.

“You made me angry.”

Vincent's face became stone.

Clara looked at him.

Then answered:

“No.”

Ryan paused.

“No?”

“You made yourself violent.”

Vincent's eyes changed.

Ryan's voice hardened.

“Come home.”

“I don't have a home with you.”

“You're my wife.”

“Not for long.”

A long silence.

Then Ryan said:

“Did you find Anthony's box?”

Clara smiled sadly.

There it was.

Not love.

Not apology.

The box.

“No.”

“I can help you.”

“No.”

“Clara, listen to me.”

“No.”

She disconnected.

Her hands shook afterward.

Vincent didn't tell her to calm down.

He simply sat.

Eventually Clara whispered:

“That was the first time.”

“What?”

“I said no and hung up.”

Vincent looked at her.

“Good.”

She laughed nervously.

“That's it?”

“What do you want, a parade?”

“Maybe.”

“I'll arrange one.”

She smiled.

Then every light in the mansion went out.

Vincent stood.

Backup power should have activated immediately.

It didn't.

Matteo's voice came through the radio.

“Breach.”

Gunfire sounded near the south gate.

Vincent grabbed Clara's hand.

“Safe room.”

“No.”

“Not now.”

He pulled her through the corridor.

They reached the security door.

Open.

Inside, someone waited.

Ryan.

Holding a gun.

Clara stopped.

Ryan smiled.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

Vincent moved in front of her.

Ryan aimed at him.

“Don't.”

Vincent’s voice was almost bored.

“You broke into my house.”

Ryan smiled.

“Actually…”

He looked around.

“You let me in eleven months ago.”

Clara frowned.

Ryan looked at her.

“Who do you think approved your employment application?”

Vincent went still.

Ryan continued.

“I needed you inside.”

Clara stared.

“You arranged my job?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Anthony hid the box somewhere only household staff could search without suspicion.”

Everything Clara believed about her own plan shattered.

She hadn't infiltrated the Romano mansion.

Ryan had placed her there.

May you like

And he had been watching every room she searched.
