Chapter 5 - THE GIRL WHO GREW UP UNDER ANOTHER NAME

Z

Derek's first thought was that the note referred to a servant.

The Russo estate employed twenty-three people across its residential, maintenance, and administrative staff.

He knew most by name.

None was a nineteen-year-old girl with silver hair.

Then Isabella asked a question.

“Does Vincent Caruso have a daughter?”

Derek stopped.

“An adopted daughter.”

“How old?”

“Nineteen.”

Isabella covered her mouth.

“What's her name?”

“Emily.”

Her eyes filled.

“Do you have a photograph?”

Derek opened his phone.

He found a picture from the previous Christmas party.

Vincent stood beside his wife, Patricia, and their daughter.

Emily had dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A shy smile.

Isabella stared.

Then pressed her fingers to the screen.

“That's her.”

Derek frowned.

“Are you certain?”

Isabella began crying.

“The little scar beside her chin. She got it falling off her bicycle when she was eight.”

Derek enlarged the picture.

The scar was there.

Small.

Almost invisible.

Isabella whispered, “Lucia.”

They did not confront Vincent.

Not immediately.

Derek's attorney contacted investigators already reviewing the historical trafficking allegations and requested a lawful examination of the adoption and identity records.

Emily was legally an adult.

No one could simply seize her and declare she belonged to another family.

She had her own life.

Her own relationships.

Her own right to know the truth and make decisions.

Isabella understood that.

But understanding didn't make waiting easier.

Three days later, Emily agreed to meet Isabella.

She arrived at a neutral office with independent legal support.

Her hair was dark brown.

She wore jeans, white sneakers, and a navy college sweatshirt.

She looked frightened.

Derek remained outside.

This wasn't his reunion.

It belonged to two sisters who'd spent nearly seven years apart.

Isabella stood when Emily entered.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Isabella whispered, “Lulu?”

Emily froze.

Nobody had called her that in years.

Her lower lip trembled.

“Who are you?”

Isabella began crying.

“My name is Isabella.”

Emily stared.

Then whispered, “Bella?”

Isabella nodded.

The younger woman covered her mouth.

For several seconds, she seemed unable to move.

Then she ran forward.

Isabella caught her.

They held each other so tightly that the attorney quietly stepped outside.

Derek watched through the open doorway.

He felt something shift inside him.

For years, he had measured success in money, territory, and obedience.

Now he was watching two women embrace.

And he realized nothing he'd ever built could compare with giving someone back a piece of their life.

Emily explained that she remembered very little about the warehouse fire.

She remembered smoke.

A woman's voice telling her to run.

A man carrying her into a van.

Then a hospital.

Afterward, she had been told her family was dead.

Vincent and Patricia Caruso eventually became her legal guardians and later adoptive parents.

She loved Patricia.

But Vincent frightened her.

Not because he was openly violent.

Because he controlled every part of her life.

Her bank accounts.

Her college choices.

Her friendships.

Even her hair.

“He doesn't like it when I lighten it,” Emily whispered.

Isabella stared.

“Because it's silver underneath?”

Emily nodded.

“He says it reminds him of people who hurt our family.”

Isabella closed her eyes.

For seven years, Lucia had lived inside the home of someone connected to the people who destroyed her childhood.

And nobody had told her who she really was.

That evening, Derek called Vincent to a meeting with outside counsel present.

Vincent arrived looking irritated.

“Boss, what's this about?”

Derek looked at him.

“Emily.”

Vincent went still.

“What about her?”

“Her birth records.”

The man's expression changed.

Derek watched carefully.

“Who was she before you adopted her?”

Vincent laughed nervously.

“An orphan.”

“From where?”

“New Jersey.”

Derek placed a copy of the disputed adoption record on the table.

Vincent stopped smiling.

Then he looked toward the door.

Derek noticed.

“Don't.”

Vincent swallowed.

“Boss—”

“Answer the question.”

For several seconds, Vincent said nothing.

Then whispered:

“Your father said she was the insurance policy.”

Derek felt cold.

“Against what?”

May you like

Vincent looked down.

“Against Isabella Costa ever coming back.”
