Chapter 9 - THE EMPIRE BUILT ON SILENCE

Z
The Russo empire had always been described as a family business.
Derek had grown up hearing that loyalty mattered more than money.
That betrayal was unforgivable.
That blood made obligations permanent.
Now he was learning how easily those words could become excuses for cruelty.
Leo's documents showed a web of fraudulent contractors, shell companies, and charitable grants used to conceal unlawful transactions.
Some activities involved trafficking and exploitation allegations that required careful investigation.
Others concerned financial crimes, false invoices, and improper use of nonprofit funds.
Vincent Caruso appeared repeatedly.
So did Salvatore Russo.
Derek stared at the records.
For years, he'd believed Vincent was simply an accountant who knew too much about family finances.
Now he wondered whether the man had helped build an operation that used the Russo name as protection.
Independent investigators and federal authorities began reviewing the evidence through proper channels.
Leo provided testimony.
Isabella gave a detailed account of her captivity and the people who had threatened her.
Emily cooperated regarding her childhood identity and financial records.
Derek provided access to lawful corporate documents and agreed to independent oversight of the legitimate businesses.
He also understood that his own conduct would be scrutinized.
For the first time, he didn't try to prevent that.
One evening, Derek asked Isabella to meet him at a small café near Central Park.
She arrived wearing a dark green coat and simple silver earrings.
Her hair fell to her shoulders.
She looked healthier.
Less exhausted.
But when Derek stood to greet her, she raised an eyebrow.
“Are you trying to impress me?”
He smiled faintly.
“Apparently.”
She sat.
He ordered coffee.
She ordered tea and a sandwich.
For a while, neither spoke about the investigation.
Then Derek asked, “How's Lucia?”
Isabella smiled.
“Confused. Angry. Relieved. All at once.”
“That sounds reasonable.”
“She wants to finish college before deciding where to live.”
Derek nodded.
“Good.”
Isabella studied him.
“You really mean that?”
“What?”
“That you aren't going to try to control what happens next.”
He looked at her.
“I'm trying to stop.”
She smiled sadly.
“That's a start.”
After lunch, they walked through the park.
The trees were beginning to turn gold.
Derek kept his hands in his coat pockets.
“Sophia—”
He stopped.
Isabella turned.
“Who?”
He winced.
“Sorry. I was thinking of someone else.”
She laughed unexpectedly.
“Do you even know how to speak to a woman without treating it like a negotiation?”
He smiled.
“Apparently not.”
They continued walking.
Then Derek said, “I'm sorry for what happened to your family.”
Isabella looked toward the trees.
“You've said that.”
“I know.”
“Then why again?”
“Because every time I learn something new, I realize how much I didn't know.”
She considered.
Then whispered, “So do I.”
At the end of the path, they stopped beside a small pond.
Derek looked at her.
“Isabella, when I found you in that alley, I thought you were a problem to solve.”
Her expression tightened.
He continued.
“I didn't see how much you'd survived.”
She looked down.
“Most people didn't.”
He swallowed.
“I want to know you without making you explain the worst things that happened to you.”
For a moment, she stared.
Then smiled faintly.
“That would be nice.”
He nodded.
“Would you have dinner with me sometime?”
She raised an eyebrow.
“A date?”
“If you'd like.”
Isabella looked at him for a long moment.
Then said, “Not yet.”
Derek nodded immediately.
“Okay.”
She seemed surprised.
“You aren't angry?”
“No.”
“Why?”
He smiled sadly.
“Because I'm learning that wanting something doesn't mean I'm entitled to it.”
For the first time, Isabella looked at him without suspicion.
Not with love.
May you like
Not yet.
But with the beginning of trust.
