Chapter 2 - The Eight O'Clock Reckoning

At 7:55 the following morning, the elevator doors opened onto the 48th floor into an unnatural, pressurized stillness.

Charlotte stepped out into the lobby. She wore an impeccably tailored navy blazer over a crisp ivory shirt, her dark-auburn hair tied back in a neat low ponytail.

Every eye on the floor snapped to her.

The junior analysts who had shared takeout noodles with her in the breakroom froze mid-sentence. Two senior associates who had routinely dropped their filing backlogs onto her desk quickly swiveled their chairs toward their monitors. The polite chatter died in an instant.

At precisely 8:00 AM, the glass conference room doors parted.

Eleanor Morgan sat at the head of the long frosted-glass table, flanked by CFO David Chen and General Counsel Marianne Brooks. Across from them sat Victoria Steele, looking pale but rigid in a charcoal suit, with two thick binders laid out before her.

Charlotte walked inside, taking a seat at the end of the table.

“Let us begin,” Eleanor said, her voice commanding effortless silence. “As of last night, the blind associate arrangement has concluded. Halcyon does not operate under secret identities, nor do we tolerate the misuse of operational personnel for personal domestic errands.”

Victoria’s jaw tightened, but she remained silent.

“However,” Eleanor continued, turning her sharp gray eyes onto Charlotte, “privilege will not buy authority in this boardroom. Charlotte, you brought up a contractual discrepancy in the Harcourt Logistics renewal at 6:08 PM yesterday.”

“Yes,” Charlotte replied, opening her notebook. “Line item 42-B lists an automated regional facility integration surcharge of $142,000 per quarter across forty-two North American properties. That exact surcharge is already built into the core licensing framework on page 8.”

David Chen leaned forward, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. “That represents an annual leakage of nearly $2.4 million.”

“And it has been signed and ratified for the last four fiscal cycles,” Charlotte added.

Eleanor folded her hands over the mahogany desk. “Victoria, this renewal was initiated under your division’s authority.”

Victoria swallowed hard. “The template was inherited from the previous executive director of procurement six years ago. We trusted the vendor’s audited billing schedule.”

“Trust is not a strategy,” Eleanor stated coldly. She looked directly at her daughter. “Charlotte, you have seventy-two hours before the Harcourt master contract is scheduled for board ratification. You will lead the comprehensive forensic audit of the entire supplier portfolio. Victoria will provide complete access to all historical procurement files.”

Victoria looked up in disbelief. “You’re putting an associate in charge of a multi-million-dollar vendor renegotiation?”

“No,” Eleanor replied with icy precision. “I am putting the person who actually read page forty-two in charge. Meeting adjourned.”
