Chapter 8 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE FAMILY ACCOUNTS

The investigation moved beyond the suspicious tea.
Forensic accountants examining Costa-owned businesses discovered unusual transfers from the family holding company into several newly established real estate ventures.
Carlo had approved most of them.
The transfers began shortly before Matteo became ill.
An independent auditor found that several contracts would become effective only if Matteo died or became permanently incapacitated.
The beneficiary was a consortium controlled by a developer named Helena Voss.
Helena was wealthy, politically connected, and ruthless.
She had spent years trying to acquire the waterfront properties controlled by Costa Holdings.
Matteo had repeatedly refused to sell.
Now investigators believed someone had attempted to remove him from the equation.
Enzo studied the documents in the attorney's office.
"Carlo couldn't have done this alone."
The attorney nodded.
"That's our concern."
"Who helped him?"
"We have evidence of financial coordination with Voss's companies. Whether that extends to the poisoning is still being investigated."
Enzo clenched his jaw.
For years, he had believed the greatest threats came from rival syndicates.
But greed did not need an enemy's face.
Sometimes it wore a cousin's smile.
Meanwhile, Nia received a letter from her landlord.
Her lease would not be renewed.
No explanation.
She stared at the notice.

Then looked toward the gray SUV parked across the street.
She had a terrible feeling the two things were connected.
