Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO CHOSE THE LAW

Matteo learned about the break-in the following morning.
He was still recovering in the hospital when Enzo brought him the police report.
For several seconds, Matteo said nothing.
Then he asked:
"Is she safe?"
"Yes."
"Has she been offered somewhere secure to stay?"
"Her attorney is helping her arrange it."
Matteo nodded.
Enzo hesitated.
"We know people who could handle this."
Matteo looked up.
"No."
Enzo frowned.
"Boss—"
"No threats. No retaliation. No disappearing witnesses."
Enzo stared.
Matteo continued.
"We preserve the evidence. We give it to investigators. And we let them build a case."
"Since when do we trust the police?"
Matteo looked toward the window.
"Since I realized the way we've done things brought us here."
Enzo was silent.
Matteo leaned back.
"I spent twenty years making people afraid to tell me the truth."
He swallowed.
"Then one woman who cleaned my floors was brave enough to do it anyway."
He looked at Enzo.
"I'm not going to repay that by turning her life into another war."
For the first time, Enzo saw something unfamiliar in his boss.
Not weakness.
May you like
Not fear.
Responsibility.
