Chapter 8 - The Altar of Reckoning

Saturday morning arrived with radiant southern sunshine over the Cathedral of St. Philip in Buckhead.

Over three hundred elite guests—executives, socialites, civic leaders, and the entire extended family—filled the pews under the soaring stained-glass arches.

Sitting in the third row on the groom's side, dressed in a modest navy dress, sat Sophie beside her twelve-year-old brother Ethan and Margaret, who held Sophie’s hand with profound affection.

The organ swelled. The grand double doors opened.

Olivia walked down the aisle in a custom French lace gown, smiling radiantly beneath a cathedral veil, clutching a bouquet of white lilies. Beside her, Julian Cross sat disguised in the back row as an 'old family friend.'

When Olivia reached the altar, she placed her hand into Michael’s, her eyes brimming with victorious tears.

The officiant opened the sacred book. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today before God and these witnesses to unite this man and this woman in holy matrimony...”

When the officiant reached the solemn charge: “If any person here can show just cause why they may not lawfully be joined together, let them speak now or forever hold their peace...”

Michael gently let go of Olivia’s hands and stepped back.

“I can,” Michael announced.

His voice was not loud, but through the church audio system, it echoed with chilling clarity against the stone pillars.

A collective gasp rippled through the pews.

“Michael?” Olivia laughed nervously, stepping closer. “What kind of joke is this?”

Michael pointed to the twin 4K multimedia screens mounted on either side of the grand altar, originally set up to display the wedding program.

“Roll the tape, David,” Michael commanded.
