Chapter 1 - The Wine on the Floor

“Clean it again.”
Michael froze right outside the kitchen doorway, holding a bouquet of white flowers in his hands.
He had departed a meeting early out in Atlanta, Georgia, and driven straight to the family residence in Buckhead, Atlanta with a single goal in mind: surprising his fiancée, Olivia, a mere three weeks before their marriage.
But she was not going to be the one receiving a surprise.
From the corridor, Michael had a clear view of Sophie, the young lady who had been working in their household for nearly eight months, standing quietly with a mop before a perfectly spotless floor.
Olivia was positioned next to the marble kitchen island, holding a glass filled with red wine.
Sophie had literally just finished mopping.
Then Olivia deliberately tilted her wrist.
The red wine splashed across the newly shined tiles.
It was definitely no accident. Michael witnessed it happen.
Olivia stared down at the puddle and stated, with a cool calmness that disturbed him even further, “Clean it again. And this time around, try not to leave any streaks.”
Sophie tightened her fingers around the handle of the mop. “Yes, ma’am.”
There was zero argument. Zero protest. Not even a hint of surprise.
And that was exactly what unsettled Michael the most. It appeared as though this was not an isolated incident.
He could have easily walked into the room right then. He could have demanded an immediate explanation, but something held him back. Olivia had absolutely no clue he was standing there. For the very first time, Michael was witnessing how she operated when she assumed he was not watching.
He silently backed into the hall and set the flowers down into a vase. While doing so, he looked down at his own bare hands and recalled his mother's hands.
Linda had scrubbed houses for almost twenty years after Michael’s father abandoned their family. She would return home with skin completely dried out from bleach, her hands always carrying the scent of harsh soap. She never once complained.
“Honest labor never humiliates anyone, my son,” she would always tell him. “What is truly humiliating is treating another person as if they are worth less simply because of the job they do.”

Those exact words flooded back to his mind with a heavy force he had not anticipated.
That evening, Michael kept his distance from Olivia. She was far too engrossed in discussions with the wedding planner to even notice.
