Chapter 1 - THREE KNOCKS FROM THE COFFIN

Three tiny knocks from inside a coffin exposed a secret that almost went six feet underground.

Twelve-year-old Ethan Parker wasn’t supposed to be alone with his mother’s coffin.

But before the funeral began, he slipped away from the adults and entered the bright hall where Claire Parker’s white casket waited beneath enormous arrangements of flowers.

Ethan placed his hand against the lid.

“I’m sorry I didn’t get to say goodbye, Mom.”

Then—

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

He stopped breathing.

Those three knocks meant something.

When Ethan was younger, Claire tapped three times on his bedroom door every night.

Three taps meant:

I love you.

Ethan pressed his ear against the coffin.

“Mom?”

Another weak thump came from inside.

He ran to his stepfather.

Richard didn’t open the coffin.

He didn’t call for help.

He simply stared at Ethan and said:

“Never say that again.”

So Ethan found a hammer.

When the funeral began, he ran toward the coffin and swung with everything he had.

Guests screamed.

Richard shouted for someone to stop him.

But nobody moved quickly enough.

CRACK!

The lid split.

Ethan struck again.

A small hole appeared.

Then a terrified woman in the crowd saw something moving beneath the broken wood.

“Oh my God.”

Richard suddenly pulled a handgun.

“EVERYBODY STEP BACK!”

But Ethan crawled closer.

Through the jagged opening, he saw a face.

His mother.

Alive.

Tears streamed from her eyes.

Silver duct tape covered her mouth.

She had been trapped inside the coffin while dozens of people gathered to mourn her.

And Richard—the man telling everyone she was dead—was now pointing a gun at anyone who tried to help her.

Ethan had only minutes before watched people prepare to say goodbye to his mother.

Now he realized something far worse:

This had never been a funeral.

May you like

It was the final stage of a plan designed to make a living woman disappear.
