Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO ORDERED THE CRASH
The investigation took a dangerous turn when Rebecca uncovered financial records linking Wesley to a company involved in the highway collision.
The company had paid a driver who disappeared shortly after the accident.
Leandro's security team provided the information to investigators.
Detective Aaron Mitchell reopened the case.
Witnesses were interviewed.
Old records were examined.
And eventually, the driver was located.
He had been living under a different name in Arizona.
After being questioned, he admitted that the collision had been deliberately arranged.
He identified Wesley Harkort as the man who ordered it.
I stared at the report.
“He tried to kill you.”
Leandro looked away.
“Yes.”
I felt sick.
“Because of a construction contract?”
He shook his head.
“Because I refused to help him move money through one of my companies.”
I stared.
“Then he used the charity instead.”
Leandro nodded.
“And when you began reviewing the accounts, he needed someone to blame.”
I thought of the seating arrangement.
The laughter.
The photograph.
The tracker.
