Wesley Harkort was arrested.
The charges included allegations of financial fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, and involvement in the attempted killing of Leandro Vitali.
His companies came under investigation.
Several associates began cooperating.
The foundation's board announced an independent audit.
And the accusations against me were formally withdrawn.
I received a written apology.
It didn't erase what had happened.
But it mattered.
My reputation began to recover.
The foundation offered me my position back.
I declined.
Not because I no longer cared about the children.
But because I no longer trusted the institution that had been so quick to sacrifice me.
Instead, I began planning something new.
A nonprofit organization focused on providing medical support and educational opportunities for children from low-income families.
Leandro offered funding.
I hesitated.
“I don't want people thinking you bought me a career.”
He smiled.
“Then don't let me.”
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“Build it yourself. I'll donate like anyone else.”
I smiled.
“And you won't interfere?”
