Chapter 6 - THE PHOTOGRAPH FROM PIER NINETEEN

The photograph arrived in an unmarked envelope.

It was delivered to Enzo's office by ordinary mail.

No return address.

No message.

Just a faded picture.

Enzo stood beside his desk and studied it.

The photograph showed a group of men standing outside a warehouse.

The date printed along the bottom was eleven years earlier.

Pier Nineteen.

His father stood near the center.

Gerard Whitlock beside him.

And at the edge of the photograph stood a man Enzo didn't recognize.

A tall man with dark hair.

A work jacket.

A familiar face.

Enzo stared.

Then reached for his phone.

"Nora."

His assistant answered.

"Yes?"

"Find Mave Dunlevy's employment records."

A pause.

"Why?"

"I need her emergency contact information."

Nora hesitated.

"That's private information."

Enzo stopped.

She was right.

He closed his eyes.

"You're right. Don't access it."

He looked at the photograph again.

"Instead, ask Miss Dunlevy whether she'd be willing to speak with me."

An hour later, Mave entered his office.

She looked uncomfortable.

"You wanted to see me?"

Enzo placed the photograph on the desk.

"Do you recognize anyone here?"

Mave glanced down.

Then froze.

Her face went white.

She reached for the edge of the desk.

Enzo stood.

"Mave?"

She pointed.

"That man."

Her voice trembled.

"Who is he?"

Enzo looked at the figure.

"I was hoping you could tell me."

Mave stared.

Then whispered:

"That's my father."

Enzo went still.

She looked up.

"Why is my father standing beside Gerard Whitlock?"

Enzo had no answer.

Mave looked at the photograph again.

Her eyes filled.

"My father worked as an electrician."

She swallowed.

"He died in a house fire eleven years ago."

Enzo felt something cold settle in his stomach.

Pier Nineteen had been closed eleven years earlier.

After a warehouse fire.

A fire that had destroyed records connected to several construction contracts.

He looked at Mave.

"What was your father's name?"

"Patrick Dunlevy."

Enzo's jaw tightened.

He knew that name.

It appeared in an old company file.

A contractor.

A whistleblower.

May you like

A man who had accused Whitlock of falsifying safety inspections.

And who had died before he could testify.
