Chapter 11 - THE DAY THE EMPIRE FELL

The investigation into Gerard Whitlock expanded rapidly.
Financial records connected him to the missing two million dollars.
Witness testimony linked him to efforts to suppress the Pier Nineteen safety complaints.
Investigators also examined the circumstances surrounding Claire Sloane's death and the threats against Mave and Finn.
Whitlock was arrested on financial and obstruction-related charges while those separate investigations continued.
The arrest dominated local news.
Cameras gathered outside Baranti Tower.
Reporters shouted questions.
Investors demanded answers.
Business partners withdrew.
And Enzo Baranti found himself facing the consequences of an organization that had operated for decades behind layers of secrecy.
He cooperated with regulators and law enforcement.
Several companies entered restructuring.
Some contracts were terminated.
Others were placed under independent management.
The criminal operations tied to the family were dismantled under legal scrutiny.
Enzo lost much of the control he'd once considered essential.
But he didn't try to stop the process.
One afternoon, he met Mave at a public café.
She had agreed to see him.
He arrived without security.
Without an entourage.
Without the polished arrogance that had once followed him into every room.
Mave looked up.
"Mr. Baranti."
He smiled faintly.
"Enzo."
She raised an eyebrow.
"Still trying that?"
"Apparently."
She laughed.
He sat.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Enzo said:
"I'm sorry."
Mave looked at him.
"For what?"
"For the company I inherited. For what happened to your father. For the way people treated you."
She studied him.
"You didn't start the fire."
"No."
"But you benefited from a system that protected the people who may have been responsible."
He nodded.
"Yes."
Mave looked down.
"That's the part that matters."
Enzo swallowed.
"I know."
She considered him.
Then said:
"An apology isn't enough."
He nodded.
"I agree."
She looked up.
"Then do something with the truth."
May you like
Enzo met her eyes.
"I intend to."
