Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO TAUGHT HIM TO LOVE AGAIN

Spring arrived with wildflowers.
The ranch came alive.
Laya chased butterflies.
Martha planted vegetables.
Samuel repaired fences.
And Eleanor began visiting more often.
At first, she came to check on Laya.
Then to bring medicine.
Then books.
Then simply because she wanted to.
One evening, Samuel invited her to dinner.
Martha prepared roast chicken.
Laya insisted Eleanor sit beside her.
Samuel watched them.
The woman he was beginning to love.
The child who had saved his heart.
And the home that no longer felt empty.
After dinner, Eleanor walked with Samuel beneath the stars.
She stopped near Abigail's grave.
“I hope you don't think I'm trying to replace her.”
Samuel looked at her.
“Never.”
Eleanor swallowed.
“I loved James.”
“I know.”
“And I still miss him.”
Samuel nodded.
“I still miss Abigail.”
They stood quietly.
Then Samuel reached for her hand.
“I don't think love disappears when someone dies.”
Eleanor's eyes filled.
“I don't either.”
He smiled gently.
“Maybe there's room for more than one great love in a lifetime.”
She looked at him.
Then stepped closer.
Samuel kissed her.
Softly.
Carefully.
As though both were afraid the moment might break.
When they pulled apart, Eleanor smiled.
“I've been waiting for you to do that.”
Samuel laughed.
“I'm a slow learner.”
May you like
She kissed him again.
“Then we'll practice.”
