Chapter 11 - THE FIRST TIME SHE CALLED HIM PAPA

Winter came early.

Snow covered the ranch.

The cattle gathered near the barns.

Martha complained about the cold.

And Laya discovered the joy of snowflakes.

She stood on the porch wearing a wool coat and tiny boots.

Samuel watched her hold out her hands.

A snowflake landed on her mitten.

She stared.

Then laughed.

The sound filled the yard.

Samuel smiled.

“Pretty, isn't it?”

Laya nodded.

“Cold.”

He laughed.

“Very cold.”

Her recovery wasn't simple.

Some nights, she woke screaming.

Sometimes she refused food.

Sometimes she became silent for days.

Eleanor reminded Samuel that healing wasn't a straight road.

He learned to sit quietly.

To offer comfort without demanding words.

To celebrate small victories.

A smile.

A question.

A night without nightmares.

One evening, Samuel was repairing a wooden chair near the fireplace.

Laya sat beside him with her doll.

She watched him work.

Then asked:

“Papa?”

Samuel froze.

His hammer stopped.

He looked at her.

Laya stared back.

“Papa?”

His eyes filled.

He swallowed.

“Sweetheart…”

She held out the doll.

“Rose needs chair.”

Samuel laughed through tears.

He set down the hammer.

Then lifted Laya into his arms.

“Of course she does.”

He kissed her forehead.

And whispered:

“I'd be honored if you called me that.”

Martha watched from the kitchen doorway.

She wiped her eyes.

Eleanor stood beside her.

Smiling.

Martha whispered, “That man hasn't looked this happy in ten years.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I know.”

Martha glanced at her.

“And what about you, Doctor?”

Eleanor blushed.

“Don't start.”

May you like

Martha smiled knowingly.

“Oh, I haven't even begun.”
