Chapter 7 - GRACE BECAME LEGALLY MINE

Grace’s adoption finalized fourteen months after she first arrived.

Not six.

Not overnight.

Fourteen months of home visits.

Court dates.

Medical appointments.

Reports.

Background checks renewed.

Legal notices.

Waiting.

On adoption day, I wore the same inexpensive navy dress I had worn to my divorce mediation.

Not intentionally.

Maybe my subconscious had a sense of humor.

Emily did not attend.

Her rights had been legally relinquished months earlier.

But through her attorney, she sent Grace another letter.

The judge asked me whether I understood adoption created full permanent parental rights and responsibilities.

“Yes.”

Whether I accepted them.

“Yes.”

Whether I understood Grace’s history should be handled with honesty appropriate to her age.

“Yes.”

Then the order was signed.

Grace Emily Morgan.

I kept Emily as her middle name.

Her first mother mattered.

After court, Mrs. Chen brought cupcakes.

Elena cried.

My coworkers filled the clinic break room with balloons.

No billionaire.

No miracle pregnancy.

No dramatic genetic twist.

Just paperwork creating permanence around a relationship love had already built.

That evening, Grace fell asleep on my chest.

I whispered:

“You’re home.”

Then corrected myself.

“We’re home.”

Because adoption had not rescued only her.

It had not “completed” me either.

I hated that language now.

I had never been incomplete.

Grace did not exist to fix the wound Jordan caused.

She was not evidence that Diane was wrong about my womanhood.

May you like

She was herself.

That distinction became one of the most important promises I made as a mother.
