Chapter 4 - The Truth Behind the Five-Year Silence

Dante went completely, dangerously still.
The name hit the room like a concussive shockwave.
Julian Moretti. Dante’s thirty-eight-year-old first cousin. The Managing Director of Moretti Harbor Logistics and the man who managed the family’s international cargo routes.
“Tell me everything, Elena,” Dante commanded, his voice stripped of all emotion, cold as hardened steel.
Elena drew a trembling breath, wiping a tear from her cheek.
“Five years ago, two days before you were going to announce our engagement to the family council… Julian came to my apartment while you were in New York negotiating the port merger,” Elena recounted, her voice shaking with remembered dread. “He showed me photographs of three sniper positions surrounding your hotel.”
She clutched the hospital blanket.
“Julian told me that the old guard on the council would never accept a woman from a working-class background marrying the boss. He said if I didn’t pack a single bag and vanish without a word, he would trigger the hit in Manhattan and frame the Greco family for your murder.”
“And the baby?” Dante whispered, his heart pounding against his ribs.
“I didn’t know I was pregnant until three weeks after I fled,” Elena wept. “I lived in fear every single day. I changed my name. I worked three cleaning shifts. I never used a credit card or a bank account. I thought if Julian ever found out Lily existed, he would kill her to protect his claim to your seat.”
Dante closed his eyes for five long seconds.
In that silence, the five years of phantom betrayal, the cold nights of self-inflicted hatred, and the bitter grief that had turned his heart to stone dissolved completely—replaced by a blazing, righteous inferno.
He stood up, walked to the side of the bed, and gently pulled Elena into his arms.

Elena buried her face into his chest, her slender body shaking with five years of suppressed sobs as Dante held her with fierce, unbreakable reverence.
“The storm is over, Elena,” Dante murmured into her hair, kissing the top of her head. “You protected our daughter. Now watch me eradicate the monster.”
