Chapter 13 - THE LIFE SHE CHOSE

Two years passed.

Sadi completed her business administration program and accepted a position with a nonprofit helping workers recover unpaid wages.

She loved the work.

Many of the people who came through the office reminded her of herself.

Exhausted.

Afraid.

Convinced nobody would listen.

She helped them understand their options.

Sometimes she simply sat with them while they cried.

She knew how important that could be.

Leo continued rebuilding his life.

He worked in legitimate logistics consulting under legal supervision.

His income was a fraction of what it had once been.

His apartment was smaller.

His wardrobe remained expensive because he refused to replace perfectly good clothes.

Sadi teased him about it constantly.

Their relationship deepened.

But it was not perfect.

Sometimes Leo became overly protective.

Sometimes Sadi withdrew when arguments reminded her of Rey.

They learned to recognize those moments.

They apologized.

They made changes.

And they kept choosing each other.

One evening, Sadi found Leo standing in her kitchen holding a broken coffee mug.

He looked horrified.

"I dropped it."

She stared.

Then laughed.

"It's a mug, Leo."

"I know."

"Then why do you look like you've committed a crime?"

He smiled.

"Old habits."

She took his hand.

"Nobody gets punished for accidents in this house."

Leo looked at her.

The words settled between them.

Years earlier, she had expected violence for spilling a single drop of coffee.

Now she stood in a kitchen where broken dishes meant nothing more than a broom and a replacement mug.

He kissed her forehead.

"I love you," he said.

May you like

Sadi smiled.

"I love you too."
