Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE DINER WINDOWS SHATTERED

The attack happened just before closing.

Rain hammered against the windows.

Frank was counting the register.

I was stacking coffee cups.

Ben had stopped by to walk me home.

At 10:42, a dark sedan slowed outside.

I barely noticed it.

Then something struck the front window.

Glass shattered across the empty booths.

Ben grabbed my arm and pulled me behind the counter.

"Down!"

A second object struck the door.

Frank shouted for everyone to stay away from the windows.

By the time police arrived, the car was gone.

Nobody was injured.

But the diner looked as though a storm had moved through it.

Broken glass covered the floor.

Cold wind swept through the room.

And taped to the outside of the door was a message.

STOP ASKING ABOUT ARTHUR.

I stared at it.

Ben stood beside me.

His face was pale.

"Lily, this has to stop."

I looked at him.

"I know."

"No. I mean it."

His voice cracked.

"Mom's gone. Dad's gone. You're all I have."

The words broke my heart.

I hugged him.

"I'm here."

He held on.

"Then stay here."

Dominic arrived after the police had documented the damage and taken statements.

He stopped outside the diner.

His expression became frighteningly still when he saw the broken glass.

Marcus stood beside him.

For a moment, I thought I was about to witness the man everyone feared.

Dominic reached for his phone.

Then looked toward me.

I saw the conflict in his face.

The old instinct.

Find the men.

Make them afraid.

Hurt them before they hurt us.

Instead, he called Sarah.

Then spoke to the investigating officer.

I watched, surprised.

He didn't threaten anyone.

He didn't offer to handle things privately.

He provided relevant information and agreed to cooperate.

Afterward, he approached me.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Ben?"

"He's okay."

Dominic exhaled.

"I'm sorry."

I looked toward the ruined window.

"Don't apologize for someone else's attack."

His eyes darkened.

"My organization helped create the conditions that allowed men like this to thrive."

I stared at him.

He continued.

"I'm beginning to understand that I can't keep claiming I'm different from Arthur while using the same methods."

For the first time, I saw something truly change behind his eyes.

Not simply regret.

A decision.

Frank received help arranging repairs through insurance and community assistance. Dominic offered to cover losses, but Frank insisted any support be documented without strings.

I agreed with him.

The diner wasn't going to become a Vale property because someone had attacked it.

Two days later, Dennis Crowley was found alive.

He'd contacted an attorney after hiding from the people he feared were following him.

Investigators arranged an interview under appropriate safeguards.

His statement was complicated.

He admitted helping Arthur Bellamy move money through businesses that obscured beneficial ownership.

He claimed he'd later discovered plans to regain control of Dominic's companies through fabricated debts and threats against associates.

Dennis also admitted that the confrontation at the diner hadn't been spontaneous.

Arthur's people wanted Dominic provoked in public.

A recording of violence could be used to support claims that Dominic was unstable and unfit to manage certain business assets.

I sat in Claire's office listening to the summary.

The blood on Dominic's cheek.

The terrified customers.

The bodyguard's gun.

The whole encounter had been useful to someone.

Then Dennis revealed another detail.

Arthur had been searching for a set of documents Grace Carter copied decades earlier.

Documents that could connect him to the abuse Dominic suffered as a child and to older financial crimes.

He believed Grace's daughter might have them.

I stared at Claire.

"They targeted me before I touched Dominic?"

She nodded.

"That's possible, based on the information we're hearing."

My stomach twisted.

For days, I'd wondered whether helping Dominic had placed my family in danger.

May you like

Now I realized someone may already have been watching us.

And my simple act of kindness had made it impossible for them to predict what Dominic would do next.
