Chapter 1 - THE ONE TOUCH NOBODY DARED MAKE

One touch was enough to get a man beaten in front of everyone at the diner. But when I noticed blood running down the cheek of New York's most feared mafia boss, I reached across the table and wiped it away with a warm towel. His bodyguard immediately reached for his gun—and when Dominic Vale looked up at me, the expression in his eyes wasn't anger. It was something far more unexpected.
My name is Lily Carter. I'm twenty-four, and I work as a waitress at the Harbor Light Diner in Hawthorne, Pennsylvania.
I don't come from money.
I don't know powerful people.
And after eleven hours of carrying coffee, cleaning tables, and smiling at rude customers, I barely have enough energy to think straight.
That was probably why I made the most dangerous mistake of my life.
I touched Dominic Vale.
Everyone in Hawthorne knew his name.
At thirty-eight, Dominic controlled shipping companies, private clubs, and businesses that made him one of the most feared mafia bosses in the region.
People lowered their voices when he entered a room.
Even his own men watched every movement he made.
And there was one rule nobody dared break.
Never touch Dominic Vale.
Not on the shoulder.
Not on the arm.
Not even an accidental brush in a crowded hallway.
Some said he'd broken men's fingers for trying to shake his hand.
Others whispered that something terrible had happened to him when he was a child.
Nobody knew the truth.
But everyone respected the warning.
Except me.
That rainy October evening, Dominic entered our diner with three men in dark suits.
The atmosphere changed immediately.
Conversations grew quieter.
Customers lowered their eyes.
Even my manager, Frank Miller, looked nervous.
I was carrying a pot of coffee when a businessman named Dennis Crowley approached Dominic's booth.
At first, they spoke quietly.
Then Dennis started shouting.
"You can't do this to me!"
Dominic didn't raise his voice.
"Sit down."
Dennis leaned forward.
One of Dominic's bodyguards immediately grabbed him and slammed him against the booth.
People gasped.
Dennis struggled.
And somewhere in the commotion, something struck Dominic's cheek.
A thin line of blood appeared beneath his left cheekbone.
That's what I noticed.
Not the gun beneath the bodyguard's jacket.
Not the terrified customers.
Not the man being dragged toward the kitchen exit.
Just the blood.
I'd spent years working in restaurants, cleaning spills, tending small cuts, and helping people without thinking twice.
So I grabbed a warm dish towel.
Walked straight toward Dominic.
And gently wiped the blood from his face.
"There," I murmured.
My knuckles brushed his jaw.
The entire diner went silent.
Dominic froze.
His right-hand man, Marcus Reed, reached beneath his jacket.
"Back away."
I stopped breathing.
Only then did I realize what I'd done.
"Oh."
Marcus stared at me in disbelief.
"Do you have a death wish?"
My hands began shaking.
"I'm sorry. He was bleeding."
Dominic hadn't moved.
His dark eyes were fixed on my face.
He looked shocked.
Not furious.
Not offended.
Just completely stunned.
I dropped the towel.
"I really am sorry. I wasn't thinking."
Marcus tightened his grip on his weapon.
"Boss?"
Dominic slowly raised one hand.
Marcus stopped immediately.
Then Dominic spoke.
"What's your name?"
My throat went dry.
"Lily."
"Last name."
"Carter."
He repeated it quietly.
"Lily Carter."
For some reason, hearing my name in his voice frightened me more than the gun.
Dominic stood.
I flinched.
He noticed.
Something changed in his expression.
Then he turned toward Marcus.
"We're leaving."
Marcus blinked.
"What about her?"
Dominic glanced at me.
"Nothing about her."
And just like that, he walked away.
The diner door jingled.
His black SUV disappeared into the rain.
Only then did my knees begin trembling.
Frank rushed toward me.
"Have you completely lost your mind?"
"He had blood on his face."
"Lily, you wiped Dominic Vale's face like he was a little boy with spaghetti sauce on his chin!"
"I know."
"That man doesn't let anybody touch him!"
"I know!"
Frank stared at me.
Then his anger turned into fear.
"Go home."
I blinked.
"What?"
"Now. Take your things and go."
My stomach dropped.
"Are you firing me?"
He looked toward the rain-streaked windows.
Then back at me.
"Lily, I'm trying to make sure you get home safely."
My heart began pounding.
Because until that moment, I hadn't considered what might happen after Dominic Vale left.
And when Frank's phone suddenly rang, the color drained from his face.
He listened without speaking.
Then he slowly looked at me.
"Lily," he whispered, "it's someone from the Vale family."
