Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER LOWERED HER EYES

The wedding took place the following spring.

Small.

Private.

Beautiful.

Tessa wore a simple ivory dress.

Eli walked beside her.

Roman waited beneath an arch of white flowers.

His pale gray eyes filled when he saw her.

The ceremony was held in the garden of the rehabilitation center.

Not because Roman wanted publicity.

Because Tessa wanted to marry somewhere that represented what they had built.

Something useful.

Something honest.

Something that would outlast them.

Eli squeezed her hand.

“You ready?”

Tessa smiled.

“More than ready.”

They walked forward.

Roman took her hands.

The officiant began.

When it was time for vows, Roman spoke first.

“Tessa, the first time we met, you told me exactly what you thought of me.”

Laughter moved through the guests.

Roman smiled.

“And you were right.”

Tessa laughed through tears.

He continued.

“You taught me that respect isn't something powerful people deserve automatically.”

“It's something every person deserves.”

His voice trembled.

“I promise to listen.”

“To stand beside you.”

“To respect your choices.”

“And to spend every day becoming someone worthy of the love you've chosen to give me.”

Tessa's eyes filled.

Then she spoke.

“Roman, when I first met you, I thought you were everything I needed to fear.”

She smiled sadly.

“And in some ways, I was right.”

Roman nodded.

“But you showed me that people can change when they stop making excuses.”

She took a breath.

“You didn't save me.”

“You helped me find the space to save myself.”

Her voice softened.

“And somewhere along the way, I fell in love with the man you were becoming.”

Roman's eyes filled.

“I promise to love you honestly.”

“To challenge you when you're wrong.”

“To stand beside you when life gets difficult.”

“And never to become smaller just to make someone else feel powerful.”

They exchanged rings.

The officiant smiled.

“By the authority vested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife.”

Roman kissed her.

The guests applauded.

Later, Eli approached.

“Mrs. Mercer.”

Tessa laughed.

“Don't start.”

He grinned.

“Are you happy?”

She looked across the garden.

Roman was speaking with Naomi.

The afternoon sunlight caught his wedding ring.

He looked up.

Their eyes met.

He smiled.

Tessa smiled back.

“Yes.”

She took Eli's hand.

“I really am.”

That evening, Roman found her standing beneath the maple tree.

“Thinking?”

She nodded.

“About Dad.”

Roman stood beside her.

“He'd be proud of you.”

Tessa swallowed.

“I hope so.”

Roman took her hand.

“He raised a daughter who stood up to a man everyone else feared.”

She smiled.

“And threatened to ruin his life.”

Roman laughed.

“Best threat anyone ever made.”

She leaned against him.

For a long moment, they watched the sunset.

Then Roman whispered:

“Ready to go home?”

Tessa looked at him.

At the man who had once crossed a line.

At the man who had learned to respect one.

At the life she had fought to build.

She smiled.

“Yes.”

And together, they walked toward the future.

Not because he owned it.

May you like

Not because she owed him.

But because they had chosen it.
