Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE WITH THE OPEN DOOR

By autumn, Tessa had left Hawthorne House.

She accepted a management position at a new hospitality company that had no financial connection to Roman.

The salary was better.

The hours were reasonable.

And she no longer had to work sixty hours a week.

Roman had continued rebuilding his businesses under independent oversight.

He established stronger workplace policies.

Created a confidential reporting system.

And expanded the Mercer Foundation's medical assistance programs with outside governance.

Tessa visited the foundation's new rehabilitation center one afternoon.

A plaque near the entrance read:

THE LENA MERCER CENTER FOR CARDIAC SUPPORT AND RECOVERY.

Below it was another name.

THOMAS VAUGHN – INTEGRITY AND COURAGE AWARD.

Tessa stopped.

Her eyes filled.

Roman approached quietly.

“Is it okay?”

She looked at him.

“You named an award after my father?”

He nodded.

“He tried to protect people who couldn't protect themselves.”

Tessa swallowed.

“He would have hated the attention.”

Roman smiled.

“I suspected that.”

She looked around.

Families sat in the waiting area.

Children played near a window.

Medical staff moved between rooms.

For years, she'd believed money and power only hurt people like her.

Now she was watching resources being used differently.

Not perfectly.

Not magically.

But with accountability.

Roman took her hand.

“Come with me.”

He led her outside.

A small garden stood beside the building.

At its center was a bench beneath a maple tree.

A plaque carried a simple inscription.

For everyone who refused to stay silent.

Tessa sat.

Roman joined her.

For a long moment, they watched the leaves fall.

Then she leaned against his shoulder.

And for the first time in years, she felt no need to calculate tomorrow's bills.
