Chapter 15 - MY FATHER'S SECOND LIE

“No.”

I said it before Dad could speak.

“No.”

Rachel remained on the phone.

“Mara—”

“My father didn't build this.”

“The authorization records have his name.”

“He was imprisoned for eleven years.”

“They begin after his return.”

I stared at him.

Dad looked sick.

“Get Rachel safe,” he said.

Adrian handled it.

Federal agents reached her twenty minutes later.

She was dehydrated and bruised but alive.

Then I turned toward my father.

“Talk.”

“Mara.”

“No protection.”

His eyes closed.

That phrase hurt him.

Good.

“No lies because you're protecting me. No omissions because you think I'm safer stupid. Talk.”

Dad sat.

“When I came back, Elias contacted me.”

My stomach dropped.

“You knew he was alive.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Two years.”

I stood.

Owen's transplant.

My wedding.

Sunday dinners.

All those calls.

“You lied again.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He said he wanted out.”

“Out of what?”

“The identity network.”

Adrian's voice became cold.

“And you believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

Dad explained.

Elias had created a system originally designed to protect confidential witnesses by constructing temporary digital cover.

Charles Whitmore corrupted it.

After Charles fell, Elias rebuilt the architecture privately and sold identities to criminals, fugitives and wealthy clients.

Dad contacted federal authorities.

Secretly.

He became a cooperating source.

“Why use your name?”

“Because I was inside.”

My anger faltered.

“You were investigating him?”

“Yes.”

“For two years?”

“Yes.”

“And never told us?”

“I couldn't.”

“You could have told Mom you were working with authorities.”

“I signed—”

“I don't care what you signed!”

My voice cracked.

“You disappeared for eleven years. Then came home and promised no more secrets.”

Dad stood.

“I know.”

“No. You don't.”

I was crying now.

“I spent half my childhood wondering why you left. Then I learned you were taken. Then I spent years rebuilding a relationship with you.”

“Mara—”

“And you decided again that you knew how much truth I could handle.”

He had no answer.

Adrian stepped toward me.

I raised a hand.

Not yet.

This wasn't his wound.

Dad whispered:

“I'm sorry.”

“I believe you.”

He looked surprised.

“That doesn't fix it.”

“I know.”

“Good.”

Then Vanessa asked the question none of us wanted.

“If Thomas was cooperating, why are the stolen transfers signed by Mara?”

Dad looked at me.

“Because Elias knows how you think.”

“What does that mean?”

“He knows you found the old network by following anomalies.”

“So?”

“So he's not hiding this one from you.”

Silence.

“He's inviting you into it.”

“Why?”

Dad's face tightened.

“Because three weeks ago, I told him I was done.”

“With the investigation?”

“No.”

“With him.”

Dad reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a small flash drive.

“I told Elias I had enough evidence to destroy the identity network.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

He looked at the drive.

I stared.

“You brought it here?”

“No.”

“This is something else.”

“What?”

“A message.”

He plugged it into an offline laptop.

One video file.

Elias appeared.

Sixty-something.

Thin.

Silver hair.

Ordinary.

The most dangerous people often were.

He smiled at the camera.

“Hello, Mara.”

My skin crawled.

“You don't know me, but I know quite a lot about you.”

Adrian's hand tightened.

Elias continued.

“You ruined one elegant system because you noticed what trained professionals ignored.”

A pause.

“So I've built you another.”

My blood went cold.

“Find the seven children, Mara.”

Seven.

Not six.

Seven.

“And I'll give you the one thing your father still hasn't.”

The screen went black.

Text appeared.

THE TRUTH ABOUT WHY THOMAS BENNETT WAS KEPT ALIVE.

I turned toward Dad.

His face told me everything.

May you like

There was still another secret.
