Chapter 14 - VANESSA COMES HOME

Vanessa arrived from Seattle that night.

No engagement ring.

No expensive entourage.

Just one suitcase and a face I remembered too well.

Adrian opened the door.

They stared at each other.

Three years of history stood between them.

“Hello,” Vanessa said.

“Hi.”

That was it.

I almost laughed.

People expect former lovers to produce thunderstorms.

Sometimes they produce awkward greetings.

Vanessa hugged me.

That surprised me more.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good. I'd worry if you said yes.”

We went to the dining room.

Lucy slept upstairs under protection.

Owen was staying with Mom.

Dad wanted to come.

I said no.

He came anyway.

Naturally.

Thomas Bennett entered carrying grocery bags.

Adrian stared.

“What are those?”

“Food.”

“We have food.”

“You have ingredients. Different thing.”

Dad went into the kitchen.

Three years had apparently transformed him from missing hostage into aggressive suburban father.

I loved it.

Mostly.

Vanessa spread documents across the table.

“My nonprofit received $612,000 from Northbridge.”

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

I looked up sharply.

“As grants.”

“For?”

“Whistleblower relocation, legal fees, temporary housing.”

“Were the recipients real?”

“Yes.”

“All?”

Her silence answered.

“How many?”

“Three files are questionable.”

“Names?”

She showed me.

One jumped out.

ELIAS VALE.

I looked at Adrian.

He went still.

“Know him?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“Former Cross security.”

Vanessa frowned.

“I thought he died.”

“So did I.”

“How?”

“Car bombing. Twelve years ago.”

Dad entered from the kitchen.

A plate in his hands.

“What name?”

“Elias Vale.”

The plate slipped.

Adrian caught it.

Dad stared at him.

“No.”

“You knew him?”

Thomas looked older suddenly.

“Elias wasn't security.”

“What was he?”

Dad sat.

“He designed the accounting architecture Charles Whitmore used.”

Vanessa's face drained.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why would I think he was dead?”

“Because Charles wanted everyone to.”

I leaned forward.

“Did Elias know about the six foundations?”

“He built them.”

There it was.

A bridge between the old network and the new one.

Not Charles returning.

Not Pierce.

Something they'd left behind.

“Why children's identities?”

Dad shook his head.

“Back then, the foundations were mostly laundering mechanisms. We never used children.”

Vanessa whispered:

“Maybe Elias improved the model.”

My phone rang.

Rachel's number.

I answered immediately.

“Mara?”

Her voice.

Weak.

“Rachel?”

“I got away.”

Everyone stood.

“Where are you?”

“I don't know. Gas station. Route 41.”

“We're coming.”

“No.”

“Rachel—”

“Listen.”

She began crying.

“They aren't trying to steal the identities.”

“What?”

“They're building clean ones.”

I frowned.

“For whom?”

“People who need to disappear.”

Silence.

Vanessa understood first.

“Witnesses?”

Rachel whispered:

“Criminals.”

New names.

New medical histories.

New childhood records.

Entire identities built from fragments stolen from real children.

Adrian's expression changed.

A network capable of making adults disappear into legitimate identities.

Not money laundering.

Human laundering.

Rachel continued.

“And Mara?”

“Yes?”

“The name running the system isn't Elias Vale.”

My pulse slowed.

“Who is it?”

Rachel whispered:

“Thomas Bennett.”

Every person at the table turned toward my father.

May you like

And Dad closed his eyes.
