Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO APOLOGIZE

Damian's own legal consequences followed.
He cooperated.
Accepted responsibility.
Paid substantial penalties.
And faced restrictions on his business activities.
The process wasn't easy.
He lost money.
Influence.
Friends.
But he didn't complain to me.
One afternoon, he asked to meet at a quiet café.
I arrived expecting another discussion about the investigation.
Instead, he placed a small envelope on the table.
I frowned.
“What's this?”
He looked nervous.
A strange expression on a man who'd once controlled half the room with a glance.
“Something I should've given you years ago.”
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
My father.
Smiling.
Standing beside a younger Damian.
I stared.
Damian continued.
“Your father took that after we'd completed a safety inspection.”
I swallowed.
He looked down.
“Chloe, I owe you an apology.”
I stared at him.
He continued.
“Not because I was caught. Not because Marcus was exposed.”
His voice shook.
“Because I failed your father.”
I looked down.
“And I failed you.”
For a long moment, I said nothing.
Then I whispered:
“I hated you when I found out.”
Damian nodded.
“I know.”
I looked at him.
“Part of me still does.”
He swallowed.
“I understand.”
Silence.
Then I continued.
“But I also saw you tell the truth when it cost you everything.”
Damian looked up.
I smiled sadly.
“That matters.”
He nodded.
I placed the photograph carefully back in the envelope.
“I don't know if I can forgive everything.”
Damian's voice was quiet.
May you like
“You don't have to.”
For the first time, I believed he meant it.
