Chapter 11 - THE TRIAL OF MARCUS VANCE

Marcus was arrested six weeks later.

Federal investigators located him in Arizona.

He was attempting to cross the border using false identification.

The case against him involved multiple alleged offenses.

Financial fraud.

Conspiracy.

Obstruction.

And the attempted assassination at the casino.

The warehouse explosion was investigated separately.

Arthur Bell was also charged in connection with falsified inspection records.

Simon Rourke agreed to cooperate.

Leonard Vale faced charges related to his involvement in the casino scheme.

The proceedings lasted months.

I testified.

I described the suspicious chip stack.

The unusual behavior at the table.

The threat.

The blackout.

The defense questioned my observations.

They challenged my qualifications.

They suggested I'd misunderstood what I'd seen.

I stayed calm.

I explained that I hadn't personally examined the device.

That qualified specialists had done so.

That my role had been to recognize a possible danger and warn others.

The prosecutor introduced the forensic findings.

The surveillance records.

The financial evidence.

Then came my father's recording.

Hearing his voice in court nearly broke me.

But I stayed.

Because for eight years, his story had been incomplete.

And now people were finally listening.

Damian testified too.

He admitted his own wrongdoing.

Explained his relationship with Marcus.

Described the suspicious shipments.

And acknowledged his failures.

He didn't ask the court to see him as a hero.

He told the truth.

When the verdicts came, Marcus was convicted on several serious charges.

The warehouse case also produced findings and admissions that confirmed the fire had been deliberately set to conceal criminal activity.

I sat in the courtroom.

Hands clasped.

Heart pounding.

Then I closed my eyes.

“Dad,” I whispered.

May you like

“They know.”

For the first time in eight years, the truth was no longer something I carried alone.
