Chapter 8 - The Federal Raid at Sterling’s Bistro

While the federal agents secured the premises and inventoried the financial records, Vincent Kane turned to the remaining kitchen staff and waitresses who stood gathered near the bar, looking anxious about their futures.

“Listen to me, all of you,” Kane announced, his commanding voice filling the vaulted room.

The staff went completely silent.

“Sterling’s Bistro is officially closed for seventy-two hours,” Kane said. “During that time, full back-pay plus two months of bonus retention will be wired directly into your bank accounts from the Kane Commercial Trust.”

Cheers and tears of joy erupted from the cooks and waitresses, who embraced each other in celebration.

Kane turned back to my mother, who stood holding me tightly against her chest.

“Mara,” Kane said softly.

“Yes, Mr. Kane?”

“This restaurant requires a Managing Executive Director who understands both numbers and human dignity,” Kane said, sliding a gold-embossed contract folio onto the bar counter. “You will hold forty-nine percent operating equity, with full executive authority over hiring, menus, and payroll.”

Mom gasped, her hand covering her mouth as tears of pure, unadulterated joy filled her eyes. “Mr. Kane... are you serious?”

“I never joke about business, Mara,” Kane smiled, a genuine, warm expression transforming his hardened face. “And I definitely never joke with accountants who can find six hundred thousand dollars in ninety seconds.”
