Chapter 4 - The Ledger Behind the Cash Register

“What... what are purple stars?” Sterling squeaked, sweat pouring down his temples, soaking his Italian collar.
Kane looked down at me. “Tell him, Rory.”
I leaned forward from Marcus’s shoulder, pointing my finger at Sterling’s chest.
“Those are the nights Mommy didn't eat dinner,” I said in my clear, small voice. “She told me she had a big lunch so I could have the bread and peanut butter.”
A collective, horrified gasp rippled across the ninety diners in the room.
Several wealthy patrons pushed their plates away in disgust. An elderly woman in the corner whispered loudly: “Shame on you, Harrison!”
Sterling began hyperventilating, backing into the liquor shelves. “That’s a domestic issue! It has nothing to do with commercial operations! I’m the proprietor here!”
Kane snapped his fingers once.
“Thomas,” Kane ordered his forensic financial investigator. “Seize the Point of Sale terminal, the daily cash drop safe, and the master server in the back office.”
Thomas and two private cybersecurity specialists marched behind the bar, bypassing the manager, and connected an encrypted diagnostic drive to the main register.
Within ninety seconds, the internal business records were projected onto the restaurant’s promotional wall monitors.
Displayed in high-resolution detail were the real accounting ledgers:
The Phantom Payroll: Over forty-two employees—dishwashers, bussers, and single-mother waitresses—had been systematically shorted on wages, accumulating over $210,000 in withheld compensation over eight months.
The Double Ledger: A falsified set of books created to evade state corporate franchise taxes totaling $2.8 million.

The Luxury Withdrawals: Weekly cash disbursements of $15,000 funneled directly into Sterling’s personal offshore accounts in the Bahamas, used to purchase the $180,000 Porsche 911 Turbo parked in the VIP valet bay outside.
“Look at that, Harrison,” Kane murmured, tapping the glass counter. “You couldn't find five thousand dollars to feed a four-year-old child, but you found one hundred and eighty thousand for German horsepower.”
