Chapter 6 - MARGOT'S SECRET

Margot came to Dela's apartment alone.
No makeup.
No diamonds.
No polished smile.
"I didn't kill Elias."
Dela said nothing.
Margot stepped inside.
"I knew my father was doing illegal things."
Her voice cracked.
"But I didn't know how far it went."
"Did you know Elias was investigating?"
"Yes."
"Did you tell him to stop?"
Margot shook her head.
"I told him to run."
Dela stared at her.
Margot began crying.
"Elias came to me because he knew I was trying to get away from my father."
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
"Because my father threatened to kill my younger brother."
Dela felt sick.
Margot wiped her face.
"The night Elias died, he was going to give you evidence."
"What evidence?"
"A recording."
Margot reached into her coat.
She placed a flash drive on the table.
"Elias gave this to me."
Dela stared at it.
"Why didn't you give it to Gus?"
"Because I didn't trust anyone."
"Then why me?"
Margot looked toward Dela's stomach.
"Because Elias trusted you."
Dela took the drive.
That night, they played the recording.
Elias's voice filled the apartment.
"Dela, if you're hearing this, I'm probably dead."
She covered her mouth.
His voice continued.
"Paul knows about the accounts. Vincent knows. And someone inside the Meridian is helping them."
Then another voice appeared.
A voice Dela recognized.
Margot's father.
But the second voice was the one that made Gus go completely still.
His own chief financial officer.
May you like
"Augustine will never know."
