Chapter 3 - THE CONTRACT

Three days later, Dela was carrying champagne into a private dining room when Margot stopped her.
"Put that down."
Dela obeyed.
Margot slid a document across the table.
Forty pages.
Legal language.
Corporate merger terms.
"Do you know what this is?"
Dela glanced at the first page.
"Meridian-Hawthorne Logistics acquisition agreement."
Margot smiled.
"You're a waitress."
"I can read."
"Then read it."
There were thirty-two guests in the room.
Bankers.
Investors.
Lawyers.
Family members.
And Gus.
He sat at the head of the table.
Margot stood beside him.
"I told Augustine she claimed to have studied law," Margot said. "Northwestern, apparently."
Several guests laughed.
Dela looked at Gus.
He wasn't laughing.
"She says she can identify the problem in this contract."
Margot pushed the document toward her.
"The merger is worth six hundred million dollars."
She leaned closer.
"Find the mistake."
Dela understood immediately.
This wasn't a challenge.
It was humiliation.
Margot wanted to prove that the pregnant waitress who had somehow attracted Gus's attention was lying about her education.

Dela looked down.
