Chapter 14 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO CHOSE HER DADDY

Z
Lily turned two on a sunny spring afternoon.
We celebrated in the Moretti garden.
Not with hundreds of guests.
Just family.
Friends.
And the people who had helped us through the hardest years.
Giovanni sat beneath a white canopy.
His speech had improved modestly with therapy.
He still used his communication tablet.
But he could say a few meaningful words.
Lily adored him.
She called him “Nonno.”
Lorenzo spent the morning hanging balloons.
He looked ridiculous standing on a ladder in an expensive shirt.
I laughed.
“You're doing it wrong.”
He looked down.
“Then come help.”
I shook my head.
“I'm supervising.”
He grinned.
“Of course.”
Lily ran across the grass wearing a yellow dress.
Her curls bounced.
She stopped beside Lorenzo.
“Daddy!”
He froze.
I looked up.
Lily lifted her arms.
“Daddy!”
Lorenzo stared at me.
His eyes filled.
I smiled.
“She means you.”
He crouched.
Lily climbed into his arms.
He held her close.
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
Then he whispered:
“Hello, princess.”
I watched them.
The man who had once been feared by an entire city.
Now holding a little girl who trusted him completely.
That evening, Lorenzo sat beside me on the porch.
Lily slept upstairs.
Giovanni was resting.
The garden lights glowed.
Lorenzo looked toward the trees.
“Two years ago, I thought my life was only about protecting an empire.”
I smiled.
“And now?”
He looked at me.
“Now I know what an empire really is.”
I laughed softly.
“What?”
He took my hand.
“You.”
My eyes filled.
“And Lily.”
He smiled.
“And Dad.”
May you like
I leaned against his shoulder.
For the first time, the future felt peaceful.
