Chapter 12 - THE GRANDFATHER WHO FOUND HIS VOICE

Giovanni met Lily when she was three weeks old.
I brought her to the estate on a sunny afternoon.
The snow had melted.
The gardens were beginning to bloom.
Giovanni waited in the library.
His wheelchair faced the windows.
A soft blanket covered his knees.
When he saw me carrying Lily, his face brightened.
I smiled.
“Hello, John.”
He laughed silently.
Then typed:
MY GIRLS.
Tears filled my eyes.
I sat beside him.
“Would you like to hold her?”
He looked uncertain.
His hands still trembled.
I asked his care team to help us position Lily safely.
With support, Giovanni rested his hand gently against her blanket while I held her.
Lily opened her eyes.
Giovanni stared.
Then began crying.
I wiped his tears.
“She's real.”
He smiled.
He typed slowly.
BEAUTIFUL.
I laughed.
“Thank you.”
Then:
STRONG LIKE MOTHER.
My throat tightened.
Lorenzo stood nearby.
He watched his father.
The man who had once ruled through fear now looked happiest beside a sleeping baby.
That afternoon, Giovanni practiced a new word with his speech therapist.
It took effort.
His voice was rough.
Broken.
But determined.
“Li...”
I froze.
Giovanni tried again.
“Li...ly.”
My eyes filled.
“John?”
He smiled.
Then whispered:
“Lily.”
I began crying.
Lorenzo turned away, wiping his eyes.
Giovanni laughed silently.
Then typed:
WORTH THE WORK.

For the first time in five years, his family heard him say a name.
And that name belonged to the little girl whose mother had once brought him hot soup.
