Chapter 8 - THE DAY VICTORIA CAME BACK

Victoria disappeared from public view for eight months.

Then she returned.

Not to Ethan.

To Lily.

Rosa arrived at preschool pickup and found Victoria standing across the street.

Not approaching.

Watching.

Rosa's blood ran cold.

She called Ethan.

Then police.

Victoria did not resist questioning.

She insisted she wanted to apologize.

Rosa refused contact.

Ethan agreed.

A temporary no-contact order followed because of the history.

Then Victoria sent a letter through attorneys.

Rosa almost threw it away.

Jonathan recommended reading it.

Inside, Victoria admitted she had spent months in therapy.

Rosa rolled her eyes at first.

Then kept reading.

Victoria did not ask forgiveness.

Did not call Margaret responsible.

Did not say love made her crazy.

She wrote:

I used Lily as an object in a competition she never entered.

That was accurate.

I pushed a three-year-old child because touching the piano made me feel that my future was being invaded. That is horrifying to write. It was worse to do.

Rosa sat.

Then:

I will respect the no-contact order. I only wanted to tell you that the account paperwork has one more document you do not know about.

Attached:

A trust release.

The $250,000 account had accumulated interest.

Margaret originally intended the money as a safety fund for Rosa and Lily after learning of the pregnancy.

Victoria had concealed that too.

Legally, the money belonged to Rosa.

Rosa stared at the balance.

Nearly $300,000.

Ethan said:

"It's yours."

Rosa shook her head.

"I don't want it."

"Your choice."

She thought for a week.

Then used part to establish an emergency scholarship fund for student parents in STEM programs.

The remainder went into a trust for Lily.

Not designer clothing.

Not luxury.

Education.

Health.

Choice.

Margaret's failed attempt to repair harm became something useful.

Victoria did not reenter their lives.

That was important.

Apology did not require access.

Meanwhile, Ethan's relationship with Rosa deepened.

No grand proposal.

No mansion makeover.

They dated.

Argued.

Rosa hated his schedule.

Ethan hated her refusal to ask for help.

One night Rosa missed a lab presentation because Lily developed a fever.

Ethan arrived from a board dinner wearing a tuxedo.

"I've got her."

Rosa stared.

"You have a dinner."

"I had one."

"Lily's sick."

"I noticed."

"She only wants me when she's sick."

From the couch, Lily shouted:

"I want Ethan Daddy too!"

Ethan raised an eyebrow.

Rosa glared at the traitor.

Then went to campus.

She gave the presentation.

Earned the highest score in the seminar.

When she returned, Ethan was asleep on the couch with Lily on his chest and Button balanced on his head.

Rosa took a photograph.

Not for social media.

For herself.

Then she realized something frightening.

She trusted him.

Not completely.

Not blindly.

Better.

She trusted him because he had earned pieces of it.

May you like

That was real.
