Chapter 5 - THE GIRL IN THE BLUE DRESS

Her name was Lily Gallagher.

She had been twelve when she disappeared.

Desmond showed Sadi a photograph.

A little girl with dark curls, blue eyes, and a yellow ribbon in her hair.

She stood between two older brothers.

Desmond was eighteen.

Caleb was fifteen.

All three were smiling.

Sadi touched the edge of the photograph.

“What happened?”

Desmond stared at it.

“Our father said she ran away.”

“At twelve?”

“Yes.”

“Did you believe him?”

“No.”

“Then what did you do?”

His jaw tightened.

“Everything I knew how to do.”

He described searching bus stations, calling hospitals, questioning employees, and hiring investigators.

Nothing.

Their father had forbidden them to involve the police.

“He said the scandal would destroy the family.”

Sadi stared.

“Your sister was missing.”

“I know.”

“And he cared about the family's reputation?”

Desmond looked down.

“Yes.”

“What about Caleb?”

“He blamed me.”

“Why?”

“Because I was supposed to watch her that afternoon.”

Sadi waited.

Desmond swallowed.

“I left her alone for twenty minutes.”

The words seemed to hurt him physically.

“When I came back, she was gone.”

Sadi looked at the photograph.

A twelve-year-old girl.

Twenty years missing.

Two brothers carrying different versions of the same guilt.

“Did anyone ever find proof she ran away?”

“No.”

“Then why do you keep calling it that?”

Desmond looked up.

Sadi held his gaze.

“Your father said she ran away. That doesn't make it true.”

***

The next morning, Sadi asked for permission to review Lily's missing-person file.

Desmond hesitated.

Then agreed.

The documents were incomplete.

There was no formal police report from the day she disappeared.

Only private investigator summaries, interviews with staff, and a collection of photographs.

Sadi noticed a name appearing repeatedly.

Nora Ellis.

Housekeeper.

Last person besides Desmond known to have seen Lily.

Sadi looked up.

“Where's Nora now?”

Desmond frowned.

“She left years ago.”

“Do you know where?”

“No.”

Frankie found an old forwarding address.

Nora was living in a retirement community outside Milwaukee.

Sadi suggested they contact the police and provide the information.

Desmond agreed.

But he also asked whether Nora might speak to them voluntarily.

***

Nora Ellis was seventy-four.

She had silver hair, warm brown eyes, and hands that trembled when she saw Desmond.

“My God,” she whispered.

“Hello, Nora.”

She looked at his wheelchair.

Then immediately back at his face.

“You look like your mother.”

Desmond swallowed.

Sadi sat beside him.

Nora listened as they explained.

Then she began crying.

“I thought you'd never ask.”

Desmond went still.

“Ask what?”

Nora looked toward the window.

“Your father told everyone Lily ran away.”

“Yes.”

“That wasn't true.”

The room fell silent.

Nora wiped her eyes.

“She was taken.”

Desmond's hands tightened on his chair.

“By whom?”

Nora looked at him.

“Your father arranged it.”

Sadi felt cold.

Desmond shook his head.

“No.”

Nora continued.

“He said it was for her protection.”

“Protection from what?”

“I don't know. But a woman came that afternoon. She carried medical documents. Your father told Lily she was going somewhere safe.”

Desmond's voice broke.

“Did Lily want to go?”

Nora began crying harder.

“No.”

Silence.

Then Nora whispered:

“She kept asking for you.”

Desmond closed his eyes.

For twenty years, he had blamed himself for leaving his sister alone.

Now he knew she had been taken from the house.

By their own father.

***

Outside, Desmond sat motionless.

Sadi waited beside him.

Eventually, he spoke.

“She called me Dez.”

Sadi looked at him.

“Lily?”

He nodded.

“When she was little, she couldn't pronounce Desmond.”

His voice trembled.

“She used to climb into my bed when she had nightmares.”

Sadi swallowed.

“I'm sorry.”

Desmond looked at her.

“I promised I'd protect her.”

“You were eighteen.”

“I was her brother.”

“And you were living under a father who controlled everything.”

He looked away.

Sadi didn't touch him.

She simply stayed.

After several minutes, Desmond whispered:

“If she's alive, I have to find her.”

May you like

Sadi nodded.

“Then let's start with the truth.”
