Chapter 13 - THE DAY THE EMPIRE FELL

The Gallagher criminal organization did not collapse overnight.
It unraveled through investigations, financial disclosures, prosecutions, and difficult decisions.
Desmond surrendered control of businesses tied to illegal operations.
Several assets were seized.
Others were sold.
He accepted penalties for his own conduct.
The legitimate companies that remained were placed under independent oversight.
His attorneys warned him that the process could take years.
Desmond nodded.
“Then it takes years.”

Caleb was convicted on charges connected to the bombing conspiracy.
Dr. Vale also faced consequences for his role in the fraudulent confinement and medical misconduct.
Lily gave testimony about her childhood.
It was painful.
But she chose to speak.
Afterward, she stood outside the courthouse beside Desmond.
For a moment, neither said anything.
Then Lily looked at him.
“Do you think Caleb ever loved us?”
Desmond considered.
“Yes.”
She looked surprised.
He continued.
“I think he loved us. And I think he learned to hurt the people he loved.”
Lily swallowed.
“That's awful.”
“Yes.”
She took his hand.
“Are we going to become like him?”
Desmond looked at her.
“No.”
“How do you know?”
He smiled sadly.
“Because we keep choosing not to.”

Sadi completed another semester toward her RN degree.
She worked long shifts.
Studied late.
Complained about exams.
And sometimes fell asleep with textbooks open across her lap.
Desmond never interrupted her studying.
He brought coffee.
Ordered food.
Listened when she wanted to practice explaining medical concepts.
One evening, she looked up.
“You're being suspiciously supportive.”
He smiled.
“I'm learning from a very demanding woman.”
She laughed.
“She's probably exhausted.”
“Frequently.”
Sadi closed her book.
Then looked at him.
“Do you ever miss the old life?”
Desmond considered.
“Sometimes.”
She waited.
“I miss the certainty.”
“What certainty?”
“That I could make one phone call and solve any problem.”
Sadi smiled sadly.
“And now?”
“Now I have to be patient.”
She laughed.
“Tragic.”
He grinned.
“Unbearable.”
Then his expression softened.
“But I don't miss who I was.”
Sadi reached for his hand.
“Good.”

That winter, Desmond sold the Gallagher estate.
The announcement shocked everyone.
Frankie stared at him.
“You're selling the house?”
“Yes.”
“Your father built it.”
“I know.”
“Your whole life is here.”
Desmond looked around.
The marble floors.
The locked rooms.
The heavy doors.
The cameras.
The memories.
May you like
Then he smiled.
“That's exactly why I'm leaving.”
