Chapter 9 - The Trial of Custody

Six months later, the family division courtroom of Judge Evelyn Carter was packed to capacity.
Kendra sat at the petitioner’s table, dressed in a sharp navy blazer, her dark hair neatly tied back. She had been clean for ten months, had secured a full-time position as an assistant horticulturist at the county botanical gardens, and was completing her associate degree in social work.
Beside her sat Earl Ransom, wearing a crisp charcoal suit that stretched across his broad shoulders, Elias Vale’s silver dog tag polished and resting over his tie.
Across the room, Diane Vance and the state child welfare attorneys reviewed their final recommendations.
Judge Carter adjusted her spectacles, looking down from the bench at the mountain of compliance reports, toxicology screens, and home visit assessments.
“In twelve years on this bench,” Judge Carter began, her voice echoing in the silent courtroom, “I have rarely seen a transformation as complete or inspiring as the one before me today.”
She looked directly at Kendra.
“Ms. Vale, you have met every benchmark required by this court. You have maintained absolute sobriety, built a secure home environment, and demonstrated extraordinary dedication to your daughter’s well-being.”
Judge Carter turned her gaze to Earl.
“And Master Sergeant Ransom, this court owes you a debt of gratitude. You took a solemn oath on a battlefield thousands of miles from here, and you honored it with every ounce of your strength.”
The judge picked up her gavel.
“It is the order of this court that all temporary state protective custody orders over Lily Vale are hereby permanently vacated. Full, unrestricted legal and physical custody is restored to her mother, Kendra Vale, with Master Sergeant Earl Ransom appointed as legal co-guardian and trust protector in perpetuity.”
Bang.
The gavel struck the sounding block.
The courtroom erupted into applause. Mara and Jasmine cheered from the gallery, hugging each other as Kendra threw her arms around Earl’s neck, weeping tears of pure, triumphant joy.

“We did it, Sarge!” Kendra laughed, burying her face in his shoulder. “We did it!”
Earl held her close, his eyes wet with tears as he looked toward the back of the courtroom. In the soft light streaming through the stained glass, he could almost see the proud, smiling face of his captain, nodding in silent approval.
