Chapter 8 - Welcome Home, Soldier

Earl’s small, two-story craftsman house on the outskirts of Willow Creek had never seen so much light.

Over the four months, with the help of the NICU nurses and local veterans, Earl had completely transformed the spare bedroom. The walls were painted soft butter-yellow. A solid white oak crib stood beside the window, handmade by Earl in his woodshop. The shelves were lined with children’s books, soft blankets, and a framed photograph of Captain Elias Vale in his dress blues, smiling down upon the room.

When the truck pulled into the gravel driveway, Mara Ellison and Jasmine Cole were waiting on the porch, holding a basket of baby clothes and homemade casseroles.

Earl opened the passenger door, helping Kendra down. In Kendra’s arms was Lily, wrapped in a plush cream-colored fleece bunting, sleeping peacefully with a pacifier in her mouth.

Kendra stopped at the base of the porch steps, staring at the warm, welcoming home.

“Earl... I don't know how I can ever pay you back for this,” Kendra whispered, tears shining in her eyes. “You spent your savings, your time... you gave me my life back.”

Earl walked up beside her, gently tucking the corner of Lily’s blanket around her cheek.

“You don't owe me a dime, Kendra,” Earl said softly. “Your father paid your bill in full nine years ago in Kunar. Everything I have belongs to you two.”

Mara walked down the steps and wrapped Kendra in a warm embrace. “Welcome home, Mama.”

Inside, the house smelled of roasted chicken and fresh pine from the Christmas wreath hanging on the mantel. As Kendra settled Lily into the oak crib for her first afternoon nap at home, Earl stood in the doorway, his massive frame silhouetted against the hallway light.

Lily opened her dark brown eyes—eyes that were identical to Elias Vale’s—and looked straight at Earl.

She didn't cry. She reached a tiny hand out from the blanket, grasping at the air until Earl stepped forward and offered his smallest finger.

Her little grip closed tight around his scar.

“We made it, little soldier,” Earl whispered.
