Chapter 5 - The Family That Wanted Me Declared Dead

Sofia’s blood spread across the nursery carpet.

I screamed.

Agent Quinn pulled me behind the crib while Dante fired toward the window.

More shots shattered the glass.

“Roof across the courtyard,” he said.

He pressed one hand against Sofia’s shoulder.

The bullet had passed through without striking bone.

She remained conscious.

“Do not ruin my jacket,” she whispered.

Dante almost smiled.

Then the nursery door exploded inward.

Men wearing Moretti insignia entered the hallway.

Dante pushed the ledger into my hands.

“Take the service stairs.”

“What about you?”

“Go.”

Again, the same pattern.

He created danger.

Then became heroic inside it.

I wanted to hate him cleanly.

Life rarely allowed clean emotions.

Agent Quinn carried Sofia toward the stairs.

I followed with the ledger beneath my coat.

Dante remained behind.

We escaped through the greenhouse and entered an armored federal vehicle.

At the hospital, Sofia required surgery but survived.

Lucia remained safe at the Brooklyn apartment.

The assassination attempt changed the investigation.

The shooter had not aimed at Dante.

The bullet entered at my height.

They wanted me dead.

Why?

Agent Quinn found the answer inside guardianship documents filed hours earlier.

Dante’s mother, Isabella Bellucci, petitioned for emergency custody of Lucia.

She claimed I was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, had stolen the baby, and was associating with criminals.

The petition reported me missing and possibly suicidal.

If I died, Isabella would gain temporary control.

The Bellucci family would secure Lucia.

The Morettis could negotiate through the grandmother.

Dante called when he learned.

“My mother filed without my consent.”

“Do you expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“You have asked me to believe too many convenient things.”

“I will handle her.”

“No.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean you will not handle anyone privately again.”

The ledger entered federal evidence.

Copies went to independent prosecutors in three states.

Names began appearing in sealed warrants.

Isabella Bellucci was arrested before dawn for fraud, conspiracy, and attempted custodial interference.

She denied ordering the shooting.

Then investigators recovered messages between her and Camille.

ISABELLA: Valentina cannot remain the mother of the heir.

CAMILLE: Dante will never forgive direct action.

ISABELLA: He will forgive what keeps Lucia alive.

Camille had known.

She had helped create the false psychiatric report.

She provided a doctor willing to claim I was unstable.

The same doctor had never examined me.

Camille was detained at the airport while attempting to leave for France.

Her father froze every alliance negotiation and publicly blamed Dante.

The Bellucci empire began collapsing exactly as I predicted.

Capos accused Matteo.

Matteo accused Isabella.

Camille’s family withdrew protection.

The Morettis attacked two warehouses.

Federal agents seized foundation offices.

Employees destroyed records.

Dante lost control.

For the first time in his life, fear could not be corrected through orders.

He came to the protected hospital where Sofia recovered.

Agent Quinn allowed him into a monitored room.

He looked exhausted.

“Lucia?”

“Safe.”

“Can I see a photograph?”

I hesitated.

Then showed him one.

Lucia slept with one hand beside her face.

Dante touched the screen but not the image.

“My mother tried to take her.”

“Yes.”

“I did not know.”

“You built a family where people act in your name without asking.”

He closed his eyes.

“My father did the same.”

“And you repeated him.”

“I am trying to stop it.”

“No. You are trying to remain the man who stops it.”

He looked at me.

“What is the difference?”

“Stopping it may require losing everything.”

Silence.

His companies.

Name.

Power.

Freedom.

Possibly life.

“Will you testify?” I asked.

“Against my mother?”

“Against the organization.”

“If I do, hundreds of people go to prison.”

“Some belong there.”

“Some are drivers, clerks, guards.”

“Then tell the truth precisely.”

“You think prosecutors care about precision?”

“Give them evidence that forces it.”

He stood.

“You want me to destroy the Bellucci family.”

“No.”

I looked through the glass toward Sofia’s room.

“I want you to stop treating the Bellucci organization as a family.”

Before leaving, Dante placed our wedding ring on the table.

“I removed it in Boston because Camille’s father demanded proof that I was prepared to marry her.”

“I know.”

“I put it back on before entering the hospital.”

“I did not notice.”

“I did.”

He pushed the ring toward me.

“I don’t expect you to wear it.”

“I won’t.”

He nodded.

“Keep it for Lucia.”

“No.”

I returned it.

“She will inherit truth, not symbols.”

Dante took the ring.

At the door, he stopped.

“Gabriel contacted me.”

“What does he want?”

“You.”

“Why?”

“He says you are the only person in this family who used evidence instead of violence.”

“That does not make me part of his plan.”

“He wants to trade the location of thirty missing children for the ledger.”

“The ledger is with federal authorities.”

“He knows.”

“What does he expect me to do?”

“Convince them to give him immunity.”

“No.”

Dante looked at me.

“Then the children disappear with him.”

Gabriel was not a savior.

He was another man using vulnerable lives as leverage.

May you like

And he wanted me to choose between justice and rescue.
