Chapter 3 - VICTORIA COMES BACK

Victoria returned before the FBI arrived.

Not alone.

Three black SUVs stopped outside the Hale estate at noon.

Arthur’s security chief called from the gate.

“Mrs. Hale is requesting entry.”

“She doesn’t live here anymore.”

“She says she has legal rights to the property.”

Arthur looked at Pierce.

Pierce shook his head.

“She has residency rights pending formal separation.”

Arthur hated the law when it became inconvenient.

“Let her in.”

Victoria entered the drawing room wearing sunglasses.

Her father, Richard Cross, followed.

Arthur had known Richard for twelve years.

He suddenly looked different.

Not because the man had changed.

Because Arthur finally knew what he was looking at.

Richard smiled.

“Arthur.”

Arthur did not shake his hand.

“Richard.”

Victoria looked around.

“Where are the children?”

“Safe.”

“With whom?”

“Not your concern.”

Richard sighed.

“We need to lower the temperature.”

Arthur almost laughed.

“Your daughter hit two children.”

“Victoria made a mistake.”

Maya watched from the upper landing.

Arthur had told her to stay upstairs.

She ignored him.

Richard noticed.

His face changed.

For the briefest second.

Recognition.

Fear.

Exactly like Victoria.

Arthur saw it.

Richard said softly:

“Maya.”

The girl froze.

Arthur stepped between them.

“How do you know her name?”

Richard recovered.

“Victoria told me.”

“No, she didn’t.”

Victoria glared.

“Arthur.”

He looked at her.

“I never told him their names.”

Silence.

Richard’s smile disappeared.

Arthur continued:

“So I’ll ask again.”

“How do you know her name?”

Richard sat.

“I knew her mother.”

Maya’s face tightened.

“You knew my mom?”

Richard looked at her with something almost like sadness.

“I knew your family.”

Arthur wanted to hit him.

Instead:

“You threatened Rebecca.”

Richard looked at Victoria.

Victoria froze.

“What did you tell him?”

Arthur smiled without humor.

“Interesting question.”

Richard stood.

“We’re leaving.”

“No.”

Arthur blocked him.

“You came into my house. Now you’re answering me.”

Richard’s eyes sharpened.

“You have no idea what you are involving yourself in.”

“Actually, I do.”

That frightened him.

Victoria stared at Arthur.

“You opened the vault.”

There it was.

Admission.

Maya gasped.

Arthur felt cold rage move through him.

“You knew about 417.”

Victoria’s face collapsed.

Richard closed his eyes.

Mistake.

Huge mistake.

Arthur looked at Pierce.

Pierce was already recording.

Richard said:

“Turn that off.”

Pierce smiled.

“No.”

Victoria stepped closer to Arthur.

“Listen to me.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand your father.”

“I understand enough.”

“He was not innocent.”

“I know.”

That surprised her.

Arthur continued.

“He was afraid.”

Richard laughed.

“He was weak.”

Arthur looked at him.

“No. He was wrong.”

Difference.

Important difference.

Richard had spent thirty years using Henry’s guilt as a shield.

Arthur would not.

Victoria’s voice softened.

“Arthur, we can fix this.”

“There is no we.”

“We are married.”

“Not for long.”

Her face hardened.

“You really want to destroy my family over Rebecca Reed?”

Maya flinched.

Arthur turned slowly.

“Over her?”

Victoria realized.

Too late.

Arthur stepped closer.

“You mean the woman whose car accident your family may have caused?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You mean the mother of children you attacked?”

“They are not innocent.”

Maya whispered:

“We didn’t do anything.”

Victoria looked at her.

“You exist.”

The room went dead.

Even Richard looked horrified.

Arthur stared at his wife.

“Say that again.”

Victoria’s breathing changed.

She knew she had lost control.

“I meant—”

“No.”

Arthur stepped between her and Maya.

“You said they aren’t innocent because they exist.”

Richard grabbed Victoria’s arm.

“We’re done here.”

Arthur looked toward the entrance.

Two men in dark suits had entered.

Federal agents.

Behind them stood another woman.

Special Agent Nora Whitfield.

Arthur recognized her from Pierce’s phone call.

She displayed credentials.

“Richard Cross. Victoria Hale. We need to speak with both of you.”

Victoria stared at Arthur.

“You called them.”

“Yes.”

Her face transformed.

Not fear now.

Hatred.

“You betrayed me.”

Arthur almost laughed.

“You hit children and helped conceal threats against their mother.”

“You chose them.”

“No.”

He looked at Maya and Caleb.

“I chose what you did.”

That mattered.

Arthur was no longer protecting strangers instead of his wife.

He was holding his wife accountable for her own choices.

Richard’s attorney arrived within twenty minutes.

The agents did not arrest either Cross immediately.

They took statements.

Secured evidence.

Issued preservation orders.

The investigation widened.

Arthur assumed the children were finally safer.

He was wrong.

At two in the morning, the estate alarm screamed.

Arthur woke and ran into the hallway.

Maya’s bedroom door stood open.

Caleb’s bed was empty.

Maya was gone.

On the floor lay the photograph from Vault 417.

Across Elena Reed’s face, someone had written:

YOU SHOULD HAVE KEPT THE FAMILY SECRET.

Arthur’s blood turned cold.

Security footage showed no intruder entering.

Then the security chief said:

“Sir.”

“What?”

“We found footage from the service hall.”

Arthur watched.

A woman in a housekeeping uniform walked upstairs at 1:41.

Her face hidden.

At 1:48, Maya followed her voluntarily.

Holding Caleb’s hand.

Arthur stared.

“Why would they go with her?”

Pierce zoomed in.

The woman turned slightly.

Arthur recognized her.

Not an employee.

Rebecca Reed.

Impossible.

Rebecca had been dead three months.

May you like

Maya and Caleb had followed a woman wearing their dead mother’s face.
