Chapter 8 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT TESTS

I stopped testing people.

That was harder than shutting down illegal businesses.

No planted cash.

No fake sleep.

No surveillance beyond actual security requirements.

No loyalty traps.

Caleb complained that I'd become boring.

I promoted him.

Then made him submit to independent compliance like everyone else.

He withdrew the boring accusation.

The Hale companies changed.

Some legitimate businesses survived.

Some old structures did not.

Warehouses tied to criminal operations were sold.

Clubs with hidden accounting closed.

Construction companies received independent boards.

I lost money.

A lot.

Nothing happened.

I remained alive.

Turns out wealth can decrease without causing death.

My father would have found that revolutionary.

Maria finished her certification.

Then accepted a position with a luxury residential management company.

Six months later, she left and started her own small firm.

Torres Household Management.

Training.

Staffing.

Property operations.

Real contracts.

Insurance.

Payroll.

When she showed me her first office, I stared at the sign.

“You did this?”

“Yes.”

“Need investors?”

“No.”

“Accountant?”

“Already have one.”

“Security?”

“Daniel.”

“Sorry.”

She smiled.

I loved her.

May you like

I did not tell her yet.

Important progress.
