Chapter 7 - THE LAST THING ARTHUR HALE LEFT ME

Six months after the investigation began, Caleb found one final envelope inside my father's bank vault.
My name.
No instructions.
Arthur's handwriting.
I opened it alone.
Then called Maria.
She arrived that evening.
“I thought you stopped summoning people.”
“I asked.”
“You said come immediately.”
“That is an urgent ask.”
She rolled her eyes.
I gave her the letter.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, you found what I did.
I expected anger.
You were always emotional like your mother.
I stopped.
Maria watched my face.
“Keep going.”
I did.
Men who inherit power become weak if they believe loyalty is love.
Vincent proved what I needed you to learn.
I did what my father would have done for me.
My hands began shaking.
Then the final lines:
Someday you will thank me.
If you do not, then perhaps I failed to make you strong enough.
I laughed.
Maria looked frightened.
Not because the laugh was violent.
Because it broke.
Thirty-four years.
I had built my identity around earning approval from a dead man who considered murdering my friends education.
“He never loved me.”
Maria said nothing.
Good.
Then:
“Maybe he did.”
I looked at her.
She continued.
“But love doesn't automatically make behavior good.”
I hated that answer.
Too complicated.
“Your father may have loved you in the only damaged way he knew.”
She sat opposite me.
“And still done terrible things.”
Silence.
“You don't have to decide which one cancels the other.”
Something loosened.
Not forgiveness.
Understanding.
I burned nothing.
Destroyed nothing.
I gave the letter to investigators.
Then kept a copy.
May you like
My therapist suggested I keep it as evidence of what I did not want to become.
For once, therapy sounded practical.
