Chapter 7 - THE SECRET IN MY GRANDMOTHER'S LETTER

Two weeks after the wedding, my mother arrived carrying a small wooden box.

It belonged to Grandma.

I'd seen it on her dresser for years.

Mom placed it on the table.

“She wanted you to have this when you were ready.”

I stared.

“Ready for what?”

Mom smiled sadly.

“I think she meant ready to understand.”

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

Old receipts.

A silver thimble.

And an envelope addressed to me.

I opened it.

Grandma's handwriting filled the page.

My darling Emily,

If you're reading this, I hope you've learned something that took me far too long to understand.

Love should never require you to become smaller.

I swallowed.

She wrote about her first marriage.

A man I'd never heard of.

His name was Peter.

They'd married when she was twenty-one.

He'd been charming.

Ambitious.

And determined to control the little money she'd saved.

She left him after eighteen months.

Then built Whitcomb Harbor on her own.

I stared at the letter.

Grandma had never told me.

The final paragraph made me cry.

If someone ever makes you feel that your value lies in what you can give them, remember this: you were precious before you owned a single thing.

And if you ever have to walk away, walk toward yourself.

Love, Grandma.

I pressed the letter to my chest.

My mother sat beside me.

“She knew Daniel wasn't right for you.”

I looked up.

“Why didn't she tell me?”

Mom smiled sadly.

“She tried.”

I thought about the garden conversation.

Don't confuse being chosen with being cherished.

I closed my eyes.

Then Mom opened another envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Grandma wearing her wedding dress.

The lace.

The same lace Vanessa had destroyed.

I began crying.

Mom hugged me.

After a while, I looked at the photograph.

Then said:

“I want to restore what I can.”

Mom nodded.

“We'll find someone.”

And for the first time since the wedding, I felt excited about something.

Not revenge.

May you like

Not Daniel.

Something that belonged to me.
