Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE HERSELF

Two years after the canceled wedding, Whitcomb Harbor opened its new community arts center.

The restored warehouse was filled with light.

Children's paintings hung along the walls.

Local artists displayed their work.

Musicians played near the entrance.

My mother stood beside me.

Claire held a camera.

Nathan adjusted the final display.

I looked around.

Grandma would've loved it.

During the opening ceremony, I spoke briefly.

I thanked the community.

The artists.

The workers.

The families.

Then I looked toward the framed lace displayed near the entrance.

“This building exists because my grandmother believed old things could become beautiful again,” I said.

My voice shook.

“She believed in second chances.”

I paused.

“And she believed that the future should never belong to people who only know how to take.”

Applause filled the room.

Afterward, Nathan found me near the windows.

He smiled.

“You were amazing.”

I laughed.

“I was terrified.”

He grinned.

“Didn't show.”

He took my hand.

“Emily?”

“Yes?”

“I love you.”

The words were simple.

No audience.

No performance.

No hidden calculation.

I stared at him.

Then smiled.

“I love you too.”

He kissed me.

And for the first time, those words felt safe.

That evening, I returned home.

Opened Grandma's wooden box.

Read her letter again.

If you ever have to walk away, walk toward yourself.

I smiled.

May you like

I had.

And somehow, the road had led me somewhere better.
