Chapter 11 - THE MAFIA BOSS WHO GAVE UP HIS THRONE

The investigation into the Moretti family's past exposed more than Dante expected.
Some businesses were legitimate.
Others had been used to conceal criminal transactions.
Dante faced difficult choices.
He could protect his wealth.
His reputation.
His influence.
Or he could cooperate fully.
Nathan warned him.
"This could cost you everything."
Dante looked toward the window.
"Then let it."
Nathan stared.
"You're serious?"
Dante nodded.
"I won't build my future on what my father did."
Over the following year, Dante stepped away from criminal operations and cooperated with lawful investigations.
He sold or restructured businesses under independent oversight.
He established a fund for affected families, administered by people outside his control.
And he accepted that accountability meant more than writing checks.
Some former associates called him weak.
Others called him a traitor.
Dante didn't care.
One evening, Bianca's old friend, Father Michael, visited the mansion.
He found Dante sitting in the garden.
"You look tired," the priest said.
Dante smiled faintly.
"I am."
Father Michael sat beside him.
"Regrets?"
Dante looked toward the house.
"Many."
The priest nodded.
"Good."
Dante laughed softly.
"Good?"
"Regret can be useful if it changes what you do next."
Dante looked toward the garden.
For years, he'd believed his father's legacy was something to protect.
Now he understood that a legacy could also be something to end.
That evening, Alessia visited.
She had started working with an organization that helped families separated through illegal guardianship arrangements.
She looked happier.
More confident.
Free.
Dante smiled when he saw her.
"How was your day?"
She laughed.
"Long."
"Good long or bad long?"
"Both."
They walked through the garden.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then Dante asked:
"Do you ever wish you'd never taken that job?"
Alessia looked at him.
"Sometimes."
He nodded.
"Fair."
She smiled.
"But then I remember what happened because I did."
Dante looked at her.
"Your father came home."
She nodded.
"My sister came home."
She stopped walking.
"And you found your sister."
Dante smiled.
"Yes."
Alessia reached for his hand.
He looked down.
Then held it gently.
For the first time, neither of them felt trapped by the past.
May you like
They were simply two people standing beneath the evening sky.
And something new was beginning.
