Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT THE TRUTH CAME HOME

The investigation moved quickly once the original records were recovered.

Authorities traced financial transfers.

Interviewed witnesses.

And began examining the fraudulent guardianship arrangements.

Several former officials were questioned.

Some cooperated.

Others refused.

Bellini was located in a hotel outside Chicago.

He was arrested while attempting to leave the country.

The red folder was recovered.

Dante watched the news in silence.

Alessia sat beside him.

"Is it over?" she asked.

He shook his head.

"Not yet."

Carlo Romano's case was reopened.

New evidence undermined the original conviction.

Investigators recovered records showing Bellini had interfered with witness testimony.

The prosecution acknowledged serious problems with the case.

Months later, Carlo's conviction was vacated.

He was released.

Alessia waited outside the prison gates.

Sarah stood beside her.

Dante remained a few steps behind.

The doors opened.

Carlo emerged.

Older.

Thinner.

But free.

He stopped when he saw Alessia.

"My girl."

She ran toward him.

They embraced.

Carlo began crying.

Then he looked toward Sarah.

His face changed.

"Sofia?"

Sarah nodded through tears.

"Dad."

Carlo covered his mouth.

She stepped forward.

And for the first time in twenty-six years, he held both daughters in his arms.

Dante turned away.

His eyes burned.

Alessia looked toward him.

She smiled through tears.

"Come here."

He hesitated.

Carlo looked at him.

For a moment, the two men stood facing each other.

Then Carlo extended his hand.

"Thank you for listening."

Dante swallowed.

"I should have done it eleven years ago."

Carlo nodded.

"Yes."

Dante lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Carlo looked at his daughters.

Then back at Dante.

"Then make sure it never happens to another family."

May you like

Dante nodded.

"I will."
