Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO ASK

They dated slowly.
Almost painfully slowly.
Emily kept her apartment.
Her job.
Her name.
Richard kept his mansion.
His board meetings.
His ridiculous wine cellar.
The boys remained at the center of his life but never became bargaining chips in theirs.
Before their first kiss, Richard asked.
“Can I?”
Emily smiled.
“Yes.”
That mattered more than flowers.
Their relationship did not erase Caroline.
Emily would never accept that role.
The boys still talked about Mommy.
Richard still kept photographs.
On Caroline’s birthday, they baked the terrible lemon cake she once loved.
Emily participated only when invited.
One evening Noah asked:
“If you marry Daddy, are you our new mommy?”
Emily’s heart stopped.
Richard stepped in immediately.
“No.”
Emily looked at him.
He continued.
“Emily would be Emily.”
Noah thought.
“That’s confusing.”
Richard smiled.
“Families can be confusing.”
Good answer.
Three years after their first date, Richard proposed.
Private garden.
No press.
No triplets hiding in bushes—
although Ethan tried.
Emily asked one question.
“If I say no?”
Richard answered:
“I’ll be embarrassed.”
She laughed.
Then:
“But nothing else changes that you don’t want changed.”
Better.
May you like
Emily said yes.
