Chapter 7 - RICHARD HAWTHORNE TESTIFIED

Victoria’s trial began fourteen months later.

By then the triplets had recovered.

Energy returned.

Liam’s respiratory episodes returned to baseline.

Noah regained weight.

Ethan became unbearably confident that he was “the detective.”

Emily attended only when subpoenaed.

She testified about:

The unopened medication packets.

The changes she observed.

Her reports to Victoria.

Her attempts to alert Richard.

The planted Rolex.

The video.

Victoria’s attorney attacked.

“You were angry about being dismissed.”

“Yes.”

“You disliked Ms. Lane.”

“Eventually.”

“You had access to the children’s medicine areas.”

“Before Ms. Lane restricted access.”

“So you could have manipulated medication yourself.”

“I suppose physically.”

The attorney smiled.

Emily continued:

“But the camera shows Victoria doing it.”

The smile disappeared.

Then Richard testified.

That was harder.

Victoria’s attorney asked:

“You trusted my client?”

“Yes.”

“You delegated medical responsibility?”

“Yes.”

“You ignored concerns from household staff?”

Richard paused.

Then:

“Yes.”

Emily looked at him.

No excuses.

The attorney tried:

“Because Ms. Carter had no medical qualification?”

Richard answered:

“Because I preferred Victoria’s explanation.”

Silence.

“I had enough information to ask more questions.”

The attorney frowned.

Richard continued.

“I did not.”

That mattered.

Victoria could not use Richard’s negligence to absolve herself.

But Richard refused to pretend he had been an innocent all-seeing father tricked by a mastermind.

He had failed too.

The jury convicted Victoria on multiple counts related to fraud, child endangerment, evidence fabrication, and financial conspiracy.

Dr. Sloane lost his medical license and received a reduced sentence after cooperation.

Assets linked to Havenwell were seized.

The trust lost money in legal and investigative costs.

But the attempted $22.5 million care contract never funded.

The boys’ inheritance remained protected.

Outside court, reporters surrounded Richard.

One shouted:

“Mr. Hawthorne, do you blame yourself?”

His attorneys wanted him to keep walking.

Richard stopped.

“Yes.”

Emily watched from the courthouse steps.

The reporter froze.

Richard continued:

“Not for another adult’s crimes.”

Pause.

“But for believing authority meant I could delegate attention.”

Then:

“My children tried to tell the truth before I was willing to see it.”

He walked away.

Emily respected that.

Respect was not forgiveness.

May you like

But it was closer than he had been before.
